We have now managed to lose all the dogs tags. Jethro's first set, and Skipper's second set.
The situation is this: We don't use one collar on the dogs at all times. I use different collars depending on the circumstances:
1) simple slip leads for late night pee
2) starmark collar + dominant dog for daytime walks, less structured, more sniff time and field trips
3) prong collar + dominant dog for evening walks and times when Jethro is more reactive and needs 'power steering'
4) dominant dog collar for daytime walks working on a more structured walk w/ more obedience
I have given up on flat collars for the time being because both dogs are hopeless in terms of pressure response from a flat collar (except to pull mightily against it - working on it).
My husband has his favourite leashes, and they are not the ones I use, and vice versa. Hubby pretty much sticks to the starmark collars, I like trying different things to keep us all on our toes.
I'm slowly working toward sets of leashes and collars - Hubby's basic set always in the same place; my various leash sets (leather, 30' trainer, 12' walkers, 6' double web w/ versatile clip loops, cotton slip leads) and collar combos.
I had their tags on carabiners so they could easily be clipped to whatever collar they were wearing.
Does anyone else have this problem? The dogs are tatooed. We need to be able to produce their tags if we are ever stopped by an ACO. I wonder if I should just have their new sets of licenses clipped to the bait bag.
Anyway, any suggestions?

I always keep a flat collar on at all times for ID, and use whatever other training collar in addition to that. I think that's probably what you'll find a lot of folks do.
Also, you can get them microchipped for extra security.

I'd use a flat basic nylon collar with Boomerang collar tags
These tags are the greatest. Guaranteed - Will last the life of your dog, won't come off the collar, no tag jingles
As far as licenses go, just keep those with you. I've found that most are made of cheap aluminum and wear through quickly with any semi active dog.

I have a rule that my dogs never leave my property without wearing a flat collar with plenty of ID (name tag, rabies, dog license, Home Again tag). I find it no problem to use the prong, dominant dog collar, etc. in addition, since those all are worn much higher on the neck than the flat collar. The flat collar is strictly for ID, not for controlling the dog.
If jingling tags bother you, I would go with the Boomerang tag just for ID (I have one of those on all my dogs' flat collars; they are great), and then carry the other tags you might need in your bait bag or pocket. In addition, both of my dogs are microchipped.
I also use a variety of collars and leashes depending on what we're going to do, and they all hang on hooks at the back door. It's real easy for me to just buckle on the flat collar with ID, then select whatever training collar and leash I'm going to use. When I come home and the dogs are in the house, everything comes off and gets hung up by the back door. I don't leave collars on my dogs in the house, but I guess that's a whole other topic.

My dogs all wear a leather slip collar with a tag on it. Boomerang tags as someone mentioned above are awesome...reminded me I need on for my most recent addition.

Flat collar with boomerang id tag. I clip the other tags---rabies, microchip, dog license to my key ring. I always have my keys with me.
Dog is also microchipped, but it terrifies me to think what a lost dog would have to endure before getting the chip checked.
Friend of mine had a dog lost for 2 days. Turns out a close neighbor had the dog, but only saw the NAME on the ID tag. Did not turn the tag over to read the PHONE NUMBER. A lesson to idiot-proof your dog's id tags.

Cassie,
I'm not sure if you're talking about the clips that are like this:
http://aire-rescue.com/shop/product.php?productid=16583
I tried using these and they are terrible. I lost my Rottie's tags while she was just out walking in the field next to our house.
I'm sure there are some clips that are great, just wanted to warn folks to be careful about the type of clip it is if they're interested in trying them.
Now I just make sure I have JD's fursaver in my pocket with all of his tags in case I get asked for them. He is microchipped, but I really like the idea of the Boomerang tag for a flat collar. I'd never seen them before this.
Thanks!

Can I ask why you keep the microchip tag on your keychain, and not the dog? Especially, as you pointed out, it's sometimes hard to know if the dog is chipped. The tag gives the finder the ability to: a) know the dog has a chip & b) call the microchip company, and get all the extra info you've given them for contact, without actually needing a scanner.
I have a double sided tag - 1 side has: cell phone, work phone, and email. Other side has: "REWARD" and my address. I live in a very small community, near a small town.
He also wears the microchip tag, and an ID tag from the pet insurance company.

Good point, Phaedra. I hate tag jingle, I'm loathe to let him run agility with a tag on, and I trust the Boomerang tag not to come off the collar. Of course, now that I've said that, I'm jinxed.
