My 5 month old is starting to get dirt in her ears. I have tried in the past to clean them with a cotton ball and hydrogen peroxide. She will not stand still long enough to get to the dirt. I can get the top of the ear to about the base then she wiggles away. Any recommendations on how to get her to stay still.
NO PEROXIDE IN THE EAR
Buy an ear cleaning agent from a pet store or a vet. Put a little of the liquid in the ear as far down as you can -- both ears. Massage the outside, base of the ear.
Mop up the liquid with cotton, or with cotton wrapped around a hemostat.

Also, please note that Dr. Betty did NOT use the word Q-tip. (I know that you did not, either, Joseph -- but just for the sake of other readers .... )
Nothing goes down into the canal but the liquid agent.
There is a post here that goes into detail on the method Dr. Betty describes. I'll dig it up.
Also, if you see inflammation in the ear or if you smell any odor or if the dog is pawing at the ear(s), then I would urge that you take the dog to the vet for a cytology on the debris.
We use Epi-Otic ear cleanser that you can get at the vet's. It goes down in the ear and you wipe the ear with a cotton ball.
My older one used to have a very smelly chronic yeast infection in his ears that went away after two weeks of raw diet. I should add that we tried just about every yeast medication on the market prior to raw diet and nothing worked. He has been fine ever since.

just another note.
make sure that if the ear solution is in a squeeze type bottle that you don't just put the nozzle in the dogs ear and squeeze.
You can force a jet of the liquid out that can cause some damage to the canal. Make sure that you drip the solution in.
I always keep a towel handy (at home, and at the clinic!) to toss over a dog head when they are ready to shake. Man, it sure can make a mess! I don't enjoy smelling like Epi-Otic!

I find that I get less fuss, if the ear cleaning solution is a little warm. I put the bottle in some very warm water for a few minutes. Be sure not to over do it ... test it first on your inner arm.
