I (OH, I mean- my daughter) had one for about 12 years. They do live quite some time. I fed it live crickets about a dozen per week if my memory serves me. In the summer, I could usually snag some grasshoppers from the yard - for free. The crickets, I had to get at the pet shop and you feed the crickets flaked fish food to "stuff" them with good nutrients. Geckoes don't like a lot of handling, and can drop off their tails, so be careful with that and a young child.
I have to say, Deco the Gecko was quite a project...
BTW- it was awesome to watch the gecko hunt down the crickets and snarf them.

Yeah, we're excited about the lifespan.
The Gecko's themselves are pretty easy to maintain, IMO. It's the dang crickets that drive me crazy. We've finally got a setup where they get all the ventilation they need to stay alive. I feed them commercial cricket food, and tiny pieces of fresh produce. The healthier your crickets are, the healthier your geckos are I read. Our guys also get meal worms. Wax worms as a treat for the skinny one. Everything is dusted in calcium for now.
I've read the the leopard geckos really don't mind handling, and get pretty tame. One of ours is easy to handle, and the other is a wild child for the time being.
If you have facebook- you should be able to see this.

I could not for the life of me keep crickets alive for more than 48 hours. It is the main reason I have held off on getting another reptile.
I am tempted to try to start a Dubia colony but haven't convinced myself yet...

Wanna know my secret? The regular 'Cricket Keeper' they sell at pet stores.
Then you have 2 option. Cut out 2 sides, and duct tape a wire mesh into the hole, or take a tiny drill bit and drill BUNCHES of holes!
I'll try and take a pic of mine- I went the drilling holes route. I learned the hard way (and after all my crickets died multiple times, I read) that ventilation is key. More air= crickets that live longer then 2 minutes.
You can do it Jennifer! With air, and a constant source of moisture, I promise they will live! If I can do it, so can you!
(now go buy another critter)
I can handle bugs just fine... but I don't think I could convince myself to EVER raise roaches. Even if it meant I could get rid of the dreaded crickets... Eww. No thanks!

I fed both crickets and mealworms for variety, and as they became adults, would hand feed super worms, they love those, but may be too much for yours at this size. The wax worms are good for your skinny guy, but offer no real nutritional value. We need to keep lots of crickets, the Spiders like them too. I don’t feed crickets or bugs I find outside, they may have ingested or come in contact with pesticide. The reptiles I don’t mind, the crickets are a pain maintaining, and they smell awful!

I had heard superworms were good once they get bigger. I don't even know how big the worms are, but wax worms are as big as these kids can handle at this point. I only give our skinny Leo the wax worms- and only once or twice a week at that. She's not SKINNY I guess, just not a chubby as Infinity is!
Tammy, do you raise your own crickets? I've heard that some people really prefer that to buying them. I don't go through enough to do it that way at this point- meal worms make up the majority of the diet, they get crickets every other day, and are offered 10-15. Meal worms are always in the tank.
At what apx/size do you consider them adults? Infin is 6'', Lucy is 5'', and they've put on at least 3'' in the last 2 months. I was surprised at the growth rate.
The crickets DO smell! blah! I try to clean the cricket keeper every couple of days to keep the stench down, but it's a major pain. I have not come up with an easy/fast way to do it, w/o risking loose crickets! Yikes!

I don't raise my own crickets. We have a large reptile distributor just minutes away, so it’s much easier to just hop over and buy as needed. I would consider an adult to be about 6-7 inches, but I usually go by age. I would guess around 15 months to be a full grown adult. The superworms are much bigger,2-2.5 inches, and fat. I like that they don't require refrigeration, and are easier to digest.
The loose crickets in this house become entertainment for the cats and dogs!

I have NO idea how old our are. They were under 3'' when we got them, and skinny little stinkers. Had them 2 months.
superworms- WOAH! Thats a big worm!
My cat has been entertained by a cricket or 2... glad I'm not the only one with the problem!
