It looks like Skipper (10+ years) has arthritis in his right front leg, not extreme, but enough that he limps when he gets up from his nap. The vet suggested trying 1/2 an aspirin 1x a day for a few days and see if the limp goes away. He also recommended glucosamine (sp?) to be added to his diet.
Skipper lives to chase a ball on a grassy field. Any advice on how to best manage this?
I treat my senior's arthritis with fish oil and cosequin (which includes glucosamine). I noticed greater improvement with the Fish Oil. I would speak to your vet about using fish oil; the amount I use is a mega dose so it is important to balance it with a Vitamin E supplement.
My guy loves fetch too but since his arthritis is in the spine and he leaps to grab the ball out of the air and then lands heavily; I will only roll the ball for him. I am looking forward to all the ice melting so I can exercise him through swimming which he also enjoys but it is much kinder to the bones and joints.
I started Tash on it when she had Pano because it has MSM and ester C. Both are supposed to be beneficial as a preventative in young dogs, and helpful in releving the sypmtoms of pano.
Its not cheap at first, but when you get the maintenence dose it is very affordable considering the quality of ingredients. Plus, its made with liver. So its not only healthy, they love it.
She only gets it in the morning feeding, and at night she looks at her food like "aww man!"

Good Post,
I have also noticed better results with fish oil!
I have used Nupro Joint; but past the initial feeding, couldn't get my dog to eat it?
Think it might have something to do with the liver formula in the Nupro, and her turning her nose up, as she gets real "liver" in her diet.
I am using fish oil, even greater than the normal recommended amounts, as well as a supplement called phycox.
We do keep tramadol on hand for her in case she over does it, or for those cold damp rainy days that tend to cause her ankle joints to swell and her hips get stiffer.
