Got into a discussion with a gal thats in my SchH club.
She insists her dog is not food motivated, and will not be motivated by tug/ball/prey item.
Dog has made virtually 0 progress working with 2 different clubs, and several trainers for at least a year now.
Honey, you need to take a step back and re-asses your training style then, if you cannot motivate your dog AT ALL!!!
Rawr!!
Thats all, I'm done now.

I'm curious.
How did she choose SchH for the dog? (Or how did she choose this dog for SchH?)

I think she believes that ANY GSD can do SchH. (She'll never trial, that much I'm sure of. Can't even get a CGC on the dog)
I believe she got the dog off craigslist, not really sure how she came to SchH work.
The dog is a nerve bag, fear biter, dog reactive... just a wreck.

Sounds like someone should tell her that the dog doesn't belong there ....

Not gonna be me! I tried offering a bit of advice, and very quickly got shot down.
I don't think her being at training is harmful to the dog, but it's not helping her get any better. I think the owner knows the dog is not a real candidate for SchH, but is at a loss of what else to do with the dog, if that makes any sense?

Just out of curiosity how does she motivate her dog?
And your training director is allowing this dog to do bite work?

If she's up to date with her dues, a good TD is going to do whatever can be done with what's in front of him/her.
Maybe it's time for that discusion between the the TD and handler to take place. Ya know, get everyone on the same page with goals, how to accomplish the same, what can expected, etc (a dog like that for a novice handler could well be a source of education, it doesn't all have to be for the downside).

Betty- She does not do a very good job of motivating her dog- that's my issue! Says the dog won't work for toys or food... um..... ok? lol.
The TD is also the only helper (small, small club), and he does some tug work with her, but nothing serious. (Got nailed in the calf by the dog in question a few weeks ago when he turned to walk away...)
I think the issue is she does not really HAVE any goals Randy! Just comes for something to do, and be active with her dogs. I'm pretty sure this gal will never compete with any dog. In this case, it's not just the dog, it's her as well.
It just really irked me when I offered help on getting her prey drive/food drive going and was shot down, rudely.

Something to do and be active with her dogs. Hey! That's a good thing.
After all that's what most are there for. It's a reasonable goal in of itself. Don't you think?
The TD got a lesson too huh? Was he bitten bad? Time to show the handler how to post up and protect the decoy I'd say (watch the dog even while (trying to) listening to directions). But the decoy should have known better. Stuff like that does happen though, Strider has almost nailed my decoy a couple of times (he doesn't take those liberties with Strider any longer), but no one thought it was that big of a deal......shrug, when one plays with dogs ya know.
Don't freeze her out. Keep welcoming her into the club and let her move along at her own pace.

I figured she didn't! I was just wondering what she thought would motivate her do since she discounted food and tugs....
Frustrating when you offer to help someone and they blow you off, isn't it? But at least you tried, with some people that's all you can do.
