Hi All! I am at a loss on the info out there about protection dogs. I was directed here thanks to one of your forum members. Thank goodness!! I understand that there would be significant changes that would need to take place in order to work with a PPD, but what specifically would some of these changes be? Are the "rules" the same if you choose to add a sport type with a great alert instead? I would love some input and opinion. We are a family with 3 children under 8, small family business and large farm with unfamiliar workers. I have read most of the posts on here and as I understand it, the "great with kids, but will protect" dogs are a sham? What sort of interaction should be expected between working dogs and children? I have many other questions as well, but maybe we can start here so I don't ramble too much
Thank you! I have read and re-read those articles. I have the gun part down but a gun cannot tell me if someone is lurking around my barns 11 pm. Also, it is very difficult to keep guns accessable with 3 kids around. After 9 months of reading up on PPD's I am just overwhelmed and confused! Is it possible to find a dog that is honestly able to be left out while you are asleep without the fear of it reacting to a sleepy 5 yr old stumbling into the bathroom? What about the "on/off" switch so many sites talk about? Sounds too good to be true IMO. I don't know where to start with reputable vendors/trainers as there are none near me. I now know what to require of one! My #1 concern is for the dog/child interaction and requirements. I understand supervision is imparative and child education and control are #1 on my list, but what else should I know?
Since you have the gun issue under control the odds are good that all you need is a good alarm dog. A 'well bred" working line GSD or even a yappy little terrier will be more then enough to alert on anyone sneaking around in the night.
The combination of both is actually my choice for the home. The yappy terrier will alert quicker then a lot of guard type dogs simply because they are nucking futs!
That little yapper's alert will then get the GSD kick started for visual deterrent at the very least.
My old JRT will alert on someone walking down the street a block before my two GSDs would think it was worth looking into but it's gets them "in the mood".
Very little training, if any, is needed for the GSD to show bad intent with the "unfamiliar" workers.

Since you don't have access to a good vendor Amy, I would worry that you also don't have access to a good trainer and I think thats an important consideration with a dog that is willing to fight a man. On going training. A GSD that barks is a pretty good deterrent.

It's all possible, just really difficult to find the dog you're describing. This forum doesn't really deal with protection type dogs anymore but there's a few people left that can probably steer you in the right direction.The dog world is FULL of con artists so you'll need to start by finding someone local that you can trust to pick/find the right dog and give you advice, that's the first step. Getting the right dog is EVERYTHING, it's all the dog. Buy an adult trained dog , you won't be able to do it yourself

My yapper is a 47lb Aussie. He is great a telling me someone is near...right before he runs and hides behind me. It's an ongoing process to get him out of his shell, but he has come a long ways since we got him. I think a combo is a great suggestion! Thanks!

If I had 3 small children under the age of eight years old and unfamiliar farm workers about, a small yapper is *all* I would have as far as dogs. And I say that as a professional PPD vendor.
I would spend the money that I would have spent on a PPD and instead spend it on professional firearms training at one of the good schools like Front Sight and install a lot of high level perimeter lighting.

Thank you! I knew there was more to it than the guys who tried to sell me anything I thought I wanted. I will take your advice and put the money towards a more comfortable side arm for myself. (perhaps one of those with the magnetic ring I read about on here last night!) I have fabulous training options that I will continue with and will use the extra to put a bit more OB into my "yapper". I will also file away the GSD into my "when the kids are much older" file. Thanks to everyone for telling me what I probably knew I should be hearing.
