There is an upcoming obedience show on the 12th May 2011 . I plan to take both Kaiser and Bommi as I did for the December show. This time I have worked on Kaiser's Long down and hope to do better.
Anyway the class in which both are entering has scent discrimination. Pickup a scented kerchief(with handler scent) from a group of 10 Kerchiefs.
Frankly, I wish I had access to trainers and equipment like in the USA. I have never had any prior training experience , and I am learning while I am training my dogs. Most of the stuff I learn from the web/leerburg.com , other stuff, I just make it up as I go along.
One thing that is most helpful is the guidance and encouragement from this forum.
Hi
do you have a nickname or a shorter name to say Hi to? How neat is your video. Really nice stone structures for your building and the stairs. So you have 2 dobes, a malinois and is Bommi a special breed? I am just starting scent discrimination tonite to work up to drug detection so am very interested how you started.
Personal questions of interest - do you raise Koi fish in your patio ponds? And what are you feeding the dogs (white food in bowls - rice?)
It's always interesting to learn how people from other countries live and do things. You are doing amazing since you are having to learn everything via the internet and through forums. Are there any training books or items that maybe one of us might have extras or??? that would help you if we were to send to you?
I have 2 dobes and a Rajapalayam (bommi) The other dog is a mutt I was training for my friend. There were floods in his village and he had a lot of problems, so he did not come back to get it. Frankly he has been with me for such a long time, I have grown fond of him. He is a goof ball.
I raise guppies in the lilly tubs to eat the mosquito larve.
The food is Yogurt with rice.
Not sure if my method is correct but this is how I did it.
1. Start with one object that has the target scent and mark and reward every nose touch to that object.
2. Then use two with one scented and other unscented. Mark and reward every nose touch to the scented. This takes a while as the dog has to learn the concept of choice.
3. Slowly keep increasing the ratio of the scented to the unscented.
I regularly purchase leerburg DVDs that I find interesting. I wish I had some material on scent discrimination.

Brilliant!
Your understanding of the underlying principles really shows through in this comment.
I could hug you.
Except for that whole... different continent thing.
