Or, you can try to manage them inside. No walking around freely sniffing, teach them a place command. Teach them to Leave it on command so you can interrupt their sniffing. Try keeping everything under control in the house, don't allow anything that looks like they are competing for either space or attention. Nothing.
thanks. it is just so funny - one is 9 lbs and the other 85 pounds! the 9 lb male started doing it on walks and i just drag him away so he cannot. The 85 pound dog just started today in our laundry pile - my daughter was right there and watched him!
I think i have a lot of work to do but i am not sure how to start. they do not walk around freely - they are crated when we are not home. these things happen when my daughters (15 and 16) are in sight!
1) Purchase a quality enzymatic cleaner and clean aggressively and thoroughly any area they mark in.
2) LET them mark outdoors, and praise them for it. Isn't that where you want them to do it?
3) Like Steve said, better management of the dogs in the house.
4) If you catch them with their leg in their air, you can give a verbal correction and rush them out the door. If you don't catch 'em in the act... well, opportunity missed. Keep a closer eye on 'em.
Thanks. I always thought you do not want to encourage "marking" even if it is outside! But they will be watched very closely inside from now on. Both of them are crated when we are not home so when we are home, they will be in the same room.
Thanks - I also think since one of them will be turning 2 in the next few weeks, maybe that has something to do with it? i have always always owned only female dogs, so I have never run into this problem - I guess i should have just stayed with female dogs!
Male dogs tend to learn from watching other male dogs lift their leg, so if one just hit maturity and started doing it, the other probably learned from watching him.
My female has lifted her leg once or twice. It's not *as* common as male dogs, but it does happen.
Sara marks with her leg up when she's super excited. And then my boy pees like a girl...
I'd go with Aarons advice Carol... mark what you WANT (outside) clean throughly what you don't. Up the supervision in the house until it's under control.
