I let my dog out just now. We have a 280ncp collar on him so we can get him used to his beeper collar that we are going to be using to bird hunt with him. I listen to the beeping a few hours every day when I know no one is home in the surrounding apartments. I had the 280ncp collar on him tonight when we were going outside tonight.
Finn has this issue of diving down my outside stairs (i am an upper apartment), so we have been working on waiting at the bottom of the steps, literally his tush is planted on the 2nd step from the bottom, while I get the old puppy leash on him so he can drag that around and get the door open.
We haven't had any issues for about 2 weeks till about 30 mins ago when he decided to blow me off and charge out the door. 1) I only had the door open about 5 inches, just enough for his head and 2) I had the collar and remote on level 10. Mostly if we use it at all it is the vibrate to enforce a command such as drop.
Well the door didn't open while he was going out it shut on him pretty hard so he yipped kind of loud. I would too if I was shutting myself in the door. I closed to door completely, moved him back up two steps from the bottom, told him to "Wait" and when he did I marked his behavior.
So as I am standing near the door well while he goes to do his business, behaving himself when I tell him "No, stay on your side of the lawn." He listens just fine. As I am watching Finn I hear my neighbor go "OMG, she's hurting him. Thats cruel! I don't care who it is thats BULL****! Let's put the collar on her etc etc etc."
I was told by my breeder who's also helping us train Finn, to have a collar on him when he is outside of his cage to get used to it whether it is on or not. I know they make dummy collars or I could have used my hunting collar but after a bit that beeping is enough to drive me crazy. During hunting season in lots of brush or thick trees fine! But not in my house when ever he is out of his crate. Please.
So I want to know. Should I say anything to her? I have not said one farting peep about her dog that charges my kids (its a Pomeranian) even when she is tied up. My daughters 3 and 4 know to leave the dog alone and NOT to go near it. This dog barks at you when you walk into your apartment and when you leave. They do NOT correct her behavior, she is NOT friendly, but her owners have the gripe to complain that I use Vibrate, or Level 10 on Finn when he really really does something dumb that he knows better on.
People say snarky stuff all the time. Depending on the neighbor my approach would vary.
If it was someone who I thought genuinely misunderstood the use of an ecollar (as MANY people do) and would have a positive response to a kind explanation, I'd go for it.
It sound like your neighbor ignorant, and would NOT take a chat the right way. Many folks jump to conclusions, and are happy that way. Personally I prefer to just leave them the heck alone, and let them stay in the little ignorant world they've made.
Have a little fun with her... add a spiked collar next time.
When I read thus I almost woke up my kids I am was laughing so hard. Finn even moved from my feet in the office to the living room by hubby. Way to funny!
