I am stuck!
Harley is getting good with the cats inside the barn.
I can redirect him even if he is in full chase. Does not happen very often now.
Outside is a different game. As long as there is a line on him (6') he won't even mind the cats. Take the line off, I can't stop him unless he is right next to me and before he goes off. If he is engage with me play or OB the outside world stop existing for him.
We have been 2 week on a line from 30' to 6' and doing good. I have put a line on him as soon as I realized that he chased the cats.
With the short line he can be in full run and will stop and do as asked, line is off, he is off. On line he can be over 30' from me and it works.
What can I do to get to the next step?? I had all sort of suggestions like use just a heavey snap, e-collar, trow stuff at him
He is train to the invisible fence and electric fence (no more road apples for him :grin
So What makes sense, more time on line, e-collar, shorter line.
Inside he is very good even in the 70*140 riding arena

Ariane, we kept a very short line on Falcon for a while when he was younger and while in the house - maybe 12 - 14" long. It would be interesting to see if Harley respected even a very short line such as this... If so, I'd try keeping that on him for a while at all times until "not chasing the cats" just became the natural thing to do. There is always the ecollar if needed, but if you can get him so accoustomed to NOT chasing without you having to "police" the situation, that would be ideal.

I think one of the biggest training mistakes
is taking the "line" off, or leash off, too soon.
Better to have on if needed, then not to have on!
My pup had a long line, 30', on outside till 2 years of age.
Then I used the e-collar, After this Training!
(Set up for Success)
The 30' line is your Best option, as dogs are aware of 6',
30' gives the handler control.
Your pup is still in the learning, distraction, phase.
Give Time!

You can also start training for line on / line off non-event. Right now it sounds like Harley thinks, "The line is on, I'm not allowed to chase the cats, the line is off, I can chase cats." He has linked cat chasing to the presence of the line. I would leave the line on, you are having success with that. You could start with the 30' line, and every day snip an 1" off the line. Harley would get into the habit of leaving the cats alone and the line would gradually disappear. The main thing is making sure Harley doesn't have a chance to re-offend, because that reinforces the behaviour.

Ditto on what Theresa & Jenny said.
Don't be in such a hurry to remove the line. Every time he gets away with chasing the cats, it will be a step backwards in training & reinforce the behavior to do so.
2 weeks in a VERY, VERY short time to be on a line, especially for a problem like chasing the cats.

Already posted my friend:

Voila! No more line!

ok, guess I was spoiled with Dexter. Chasing cats was way too much work for him.
Back on line when outside of walls for him. I will laugh at him running around post and trees and other barn stuff. That will slow him down.
He is smart enough to stop at the invisible fence while in full chase
I have to learn patience, for myself.
He was on line all winter, but in the barn. The great outdoor is all new for the cats and Harley!

Me, too. My male was on a drag line out on the big field until he was at least around 2. I'd rather my dog be safe then my being sorry after the fact. But that's just me.

My pup is two and I still use a long line every day. I barely ever have to touch it, bur I would rather have it there. I've had her completely off leash before with no issues, but like Anne said better to be safe.
People act like its the stupidest idea in the world.
Those people usualy have dogs that don't listen.
Go figure.
