Need to buy new tug stuff. What next?

I skipped the puppy tugs for Roger and went right to the LB 3-tug combo. It's lasted this long, but a few days ago the fire hose tug broke in half (while he was airborne), and he's on a long-term project to shred the handle on the synthetic tug. He's halfway there so the tug is a lot less pleasant for me to use (numb hands).
The options on LB are truly dizzying. The dog is 9 months old now. Is the next step bars and pillows, or sleeves?

I have Faroh on the jute bite pillow now, but you will always need tugs as well.

I just happened to order it from here and it's the only one they have. His favorite tug is linen. I work him with all surfaces, though. The jute is good , it forces him to really bite down.
eta- He is also training for SchH, so jute will be the predominant material he is exposed to.

DITTO. What she said.
It also depends on what your future plans are with the dog. If it's any sport competition or PP, then most sleeves (arm & leg) are made of jute.
It is also a material that many pups find the least apealing, as it has a more abrasive surface. So all the more reason to get them used to it & other materials.

Hey Ross!
I have a jute puppy bite pillow (an anniversary present from my hubby - go figure!) for JD that he loves. Also have several tugs - leather, linen, soft cotton, felt and rope as well as the firehose (which he also loves and I use as a reward). He didn't care so much for the linen but my Rottie loves it. I think he much prefers the leather - especially the water buffalo hide ones on LB. He has two (I've named them "Buffy", much to his dismay). One I use as his reward for training - the other to play with in the house during bad weather.
It was also recommended to me to get him used to biting all different types of material which is why I have such a variety. Plus, I just like buying stuff for him to mess with!!!
Oh, also have one of the Tuffy toys - the alien shark looking thing - that we tug with, too, that he really likes. Fortunately, I named that one "shark" to uphold his big mean persona

Time to start doing some targeting work. Lack of handles doesn't make a tug useless by a long stretch.
Don't allow the dog to chew the tugs up....they last a lot longer.
I've still got tugs I've both made and bought that have still have life after three different dogs. Stop the damn chewing already!

If you feel like giving me some ideas, I'd love to read them!

Agreed. I ended up giving the synthetic one to him out of guilt when I would run out of bully sticks or peanut butter.
The firehose one, though...that just snapped during a normal game of tug.

Hey Anne. No idea as of yet. I'm trying to keep my expectations tempered where that's concerned. Don't want to be crushed if he ends up not having 'it'. But he's developing a hell of a grip now, and my taking the tugging sessions outside has really stepped up his intensity. Hence the need for some more equipment.

Sorry Ross, without seeing or getting a better understanding about what your doing I'm fresh out of ideas.
9 months old; time to start doing some capping.
Hands are getting bit? Or hit with teeth?
9 months old; time to start seriously thinking about where you're going in your training.
Hands are numb, is it because you're not giving the dog a chance at the target? Or is the dog hectic?
Actually Ross I have more questions then I can list.
So we can start there.
And on the bye Ross the only tug I have that has a incomplete handle on it was sheared on one bite, not worked on.
Stop the damn chewy crap already. Just don't allow it or encourage it.

"Numb hands" = the strap on the tug got ripped down to about 50% of its original width, so it hurts to handle it now without some gloves or the sleeve of my hoodie, and will affect circulation if we play w/it for too long.
I am indeed seriously thinking about the training, and have been at a small impasse for a while (choosing between two trainers and their methods).
