OK,
Well my house is realitively clean, so I decided while hubby did the taping to show you what we have been working on. The commands in the video are Whoa, Sit, Down. We use Whoa instead of sit because this was the recommended thing from the breeder when we got him. We are still working on getting him to the point of freezing on whoa were we can pick him up and move him he will not have moved. Much work ahead for this one!! So critique away. This is my first dog training, he is a little pooped out because we were playing outside tonight then came in to train right before "Bed".
He in this video is 10 months 20 days old. For size reference since I know some have asked about how big he is. The crate behind us is a Large crate, and I am 5'1". So there is your math conversion. lol. Enjoy and please give me some honest pointers just, please, for my "emotional basket-case-ness" don't knock me too far down to the point you have got me in tears lol!

Mary,
Congrats on your first video!
I admit I'm a bit confused on the whoa and sit... does whoa mean sit and sit means sit?
The one thing I'd recommend is if the clicker is his marker for doing what you asked, is to watch your timing and to make sure each time you click, he gets a reward. (I think there were a few times when I heard the click but he was not rewarded.) If there is no reward for the marker, the marker will lose its importance of telling him "this is the moment you did what I asked and now I'm going to reward you for that behavior".
Finn is really growing up!

Whoa is supposed to be stay lol. He doesn't stand when he stays he is LAZY! I have tried with a trainer to get him to stand while staying. HA. I was told not to trial him for that reason. When he stays he sits. Any ideas to help straighten this out would be great. Sit means sit. I wonder if I tape me giving him commands one at a time .. then review them to see where the mistakes are would be a good learning tool???
Normally I don't use the clicker, the girls hide them on me , so I usually use my hands. I admit I was also a bit nervous about making this first video. More time to study what I am doing and how to correct the sloppy way I am doing this. That is not making it easier on him, and is only going to bite me in the long run.
Thanks for the advice!!

More likely, confused.
When you don't use a clicker, what do you mean you "use your hands"? What is the marker?

Aaron politely went straight for the juglar... I was going to ease you into this Mary. Don't freak out or start hating on yourself, but....
What Aaron said.
Have you read the free online ebook on Marker Training or do you have the dvd?

He's cute!
I use "whoa" differently. That word, for me, is when the dog is fixated on something (a cow to move), and he's in that stiff position getting ready to pounce, like a pointer sniffing a bird -- it means "hold that position with attention" and then you can zoom toward the job when I say ok--for our old setters, it was "whoa til I get there with the gun" then flush the bird.

I've totaly given the wrong command before. Its amazing to me that the dog ever understands anything I say!
I agree that he might be a little confused, but both of you are trying and that is a really good thing. Its obvious that he likes to work with you
Work on the marker a little, and then retrain the stuff that you are having a hard time with from step one. Not adding your command until its just what you want.
Don't worry about it, its wonderful that you are trying to do anything at all with him. You will get there.

What does he do if you have a toy on a line attached to a fishing pole? You get him to chase it, tease him with it--does he get stiff like a pointer? That is "whoa" to me, the dog's attention is directed at some other thing, not me - I'm acting like the "red light" "greenlight" game we played as kids, where "whoa" means "red light".....
Is he a gun dog? Maybe I'm completely off track here!!!!! !

Watching it more then a few times and watching others who marker train this makes loads of sense. It's time for me to study study study. It looks so very easy but yes, I need to go back and start from scratch. Keep the commands but definitely make sure both he and I know exactly what those commands mean.
Have I got this part right so far?
