yea, I have the rubber tube disconnected to chase down a rattle, the box has nothing in it, I took it out to clean it, had some rocks and leaves in it, I have no idea of its purpose.

there is a large flex hose or tube that connects the box to the air filter assembly, box has muliple chambers and has a large port to the fire wall, makes sense about cold air. Diesels like cold air?
