I'm trying Buff Orpingtons this year, they're suppose to be cold weather tolerent and good foragers.
Pics of them in their brooder ( my 100 gal. stock tank, now in my dining room, lol! ): http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/album.php?aid=46247&id=100001035440907
We bought 4 Orp hens that are each laying an egg a day; then we have 12 more babies. I "think" 4 of those are roosters, though. We also bought 6 Barred Rocks, 8 Rhode Islands and 6 Aracauna/Americauna/Easter-Eggers.
Buffs are known for being a very calm laid-back chicken. Our "ladies" are great. I can turn them out to free-range for a while in the afternoons and they are easy to put back up in the pen in the evening.
It's amazing how much personality chickens can have. The EEs especially are super mellow and will just fall asleep in my hands.
Great pics Becky!! I sooo want some more babies, but I do NOT need any more adults!! (Funny how that works, isnt' it?) We currently have 23 hens and one roo and the feed bill is rediculous.
Chanting to myself: No more chickies.... no more chickies... no more chickies...
I found backyardchickens.com about two years ago; they were definitely a big help when we first got started. I've incubated all but six of the birds we've had - it is a fun process! I never get tired of candleing the eggs and seeing the little chicks forming inside the egg. (simple minds, simple pleasures...)
