I want to hear about experiences anyone has had with their kids or themselves doing 4-H with their dogs. My daughter is considering showing, but I would like to hear the pros and cons before we dive in. Right now, the dog she would show has one problem we would have to work on. He stops, drops and rolls onto his back whenever he sees a dog he doesn't know. Not even hot dogs will keep him in a sit when another dog is close. He's like an oppossum

It depends a ton on your area and how your county and state handles dog shows. At least in the county I showed in it was pretty much AKC jr handlers with a mixed breed conf class, fit and show, an agility group, and obedience wasn't required which was kind of disappointing. At this point you'd be getting in towards the end of the 4-H year, I believe the cut off is in May or June and the year starts again in September. Depending on how busy 4H is where you're at will determine which fairs are available for your kid to attend.
I would go sit in on a meeting with your kid and leave the dog at home. Get a feel for the kids and the families who are there and see if the vibe fits what you want your kid and dog exposed to.
