For what it's worth, the tick situation in our area (Tidewater Virginia) is already HORRIBLE! I'd be interesting in hearing from other folks as the season progresses if this is true elsewhere.
Yuck! Itching and feeling creepy crawlies on my neck just thinking about them. I will let you know how they get in South Dakota. None yet We get snow this weekend instead
I don't know why, but looking at that tool is giving me the creepiest, weirdiest feeling!! My back is crawling and I've goose bumps up and down my arms... Arghhhhh, so weird!!!
Tasha hates having them pulled out more than any dog I have ever known. She hides in a corner when she sees me get the tweezers.
Even though I'm good with frontline and always spray her down with adams before we go into the woods, she still had at least 10 dog ticks last summer. They are so gross!

I'm a big fan of destroying their homes. I've found nothing more effective than a good ol fashioned brush burning (if controlled burns are allowed in your area).
Usually ticks aren't too bad here. I maybe see one every 3-4 years even with my groom clients.
Up to just a couple years ago I never had a tick problem in my area. Now it is just terrible in the Spring and Fall. It's so bad that as I was petting and massaging the dog, I was actually just checking for ticks.
I worked in the Scranton area (northeast PA) two summer ago, bat surveys on the powerline. There was a lot of hucklberry/grass brush in the powerline cut, and everyone, dogs, people, were just crawling with ticks. Lonestar ticks, dog ticks, deer ticks. It was disgusting.
We'd spend an hour working, and the rest of the night picking ticks off ourselves and the dogs. I was using Frontline on the dogs, 'Off' on me. I switched to Advantix for the dogs and it actually repelled the ticks.
The over-population of deer in most of Pennsylvania is increasing ticks, and the associated diseases.
I'd recommend using a topical pesticide (Advantix) or the preventic collar. I tried the natural route for a bit and it didn't work. My shepherd nearly died of tick illness (either Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or ehrlichia- both titers were high) last spring.
Kiersen, So far I have found only dog ticks. I'm half afraid to get my new puppy in August. Thanks for the recomendations! I'll take all the preventive info I can get.
So is advantix generaly reccommended over frontline now?
The area that she picked up the ticks last summer is a popular for hiking and walking with dog owners. Have ticks developed the same resistance to frontline as fleas have?
