We adopted a chihauhua/boston terrier mix about 3 months ago, she is around 2 years old and overall a good dog. Our issue is when we leave her home alone she goes absolutely insane when we return - jumping all over everything and everybody and we started finding poops in different rooms. So I started putting her in her cage whenever she had to be home alone, the problem is she will bark the whole time we are gone and when we walk in the door she goes absolutely ballistic. I don't let her out until she calms down but as soon as I open her crate door she goes shooting out and starts jumping all over everything and everyone. If we are home she loves her crate, never whines when she is in it or at night when I put her in. Any suggestions?
She's been a good girl in the crate, she needs to go outside and run the zoomies off. Put her on the leash before you take her out of the crate, so that she has your "help" to control herself in the house, and then take her to the appropriate spot to expend that energy.
As time goes on, you can gradually add in the obedience until she comes out of the crate, sits and waits quietly, walks quietly to the door, and takes herself outside to be spastic. But first she has to learn that if she can just be quiet and calm in the house, you will take her to the place where she can "act up".
You have to help her learn that.
Make sure she is getting enough exercise before and after being crated. If she's having a fit when you're gone, she could probably stand to have more exercise before you leave.
Realize that while both of those dogs seem like lap dogs, they actually, typically, have a lot of energy. Your exercise routine may not be enough for her to settle down while you're gone. I second the idea of leashing her before taking her out of the crate.
