There's some evidence to show that dogs sneeze when stressed. Is he really hyped about the food but only has basic training...i.e. does he really want the food but doesn't know how to get it?
If so... you could try rewarding for simpler stuff or using a lower value food, gradually building it up.
he 'is' very hyped. (a very motivated dog for food) -
and, he does know how to get it.
i'm pretty sure he understands me as he does everything I ask.
The sneezing isn't 'continuous' or 'excessive' just occasional (some days no sneezing, some days sneezing) - but enough for me to notice it and for example, I ask him to watch (which he can very well) but he sneezes. and i can't exactly correct him for sneezing and breaking eye contact...
Have you looked in to Allergys? I saw a Rott the other day doing bit work and snizzing on the sleeve the owner said she didn't give him his zyrtec that day. But that tank still kept a great hold.
Sneezing can mean a lot of different things. In this case it does sound like an indication of mild stress, but it is a signal with more than one translation. Just like blinking and yawning. Its a matter of context.
My pup yawns a lot. Even the most mild stress leads to a drawn out, squeaky yawn. Since she does it so often, I usualy just ignore it. She yawns if you ask her to sit when shes a little worked up, she yawns if she needs to go to the bathroom and im slow getting my keys. All sorts of situations.
For her I know its time to end a training session when she scratches as a displacement activity. For us that is a signal that we are going for to long.
Does he sneeze at other times, or only when training/playing? Is there a particular outdoor location you are always in when the sneezing occurs? Seems to me, if it was allergies, you would see sneezing at other times. Then again, if you always train in the same location, there could be something in that particular environment.
I am really more inclined to think it's not allergies and either mild stress (not all stressors are bad) or simply excitement. The dog I owned just previous to the ones I have now used to sneeze occasionally when something got her excited and happy, like getting ready to go for a walk, us coming home after being gone a couple hours, etc. It didn't happen every time, but when it did, there would be a series of several sneezes.
