I first noticed this with Erika, I would hold a training session on a new behaviour and it seems like I didn't make much progress and I can't get the behaviour without a lot of luring, leading, begging, screaming, beating etc. but the following day it's almost spot on. Drago is doing the same thing, I was teaching Platz(down) and it was slow going. I was exacerbated to the whole thing. The very last thing I did with Drago was to feed him in his kennel, I held the bowl up and close to me and I gave the Platz command. He did everything but downed including biting I think. He finaly went down due to either submission or fatigue and I marked it and got his food right in front of him.
Today I let the little monster out of his kennel, let him run around and greet everybody and I gave him the Platz command and he went down like he was doing it all his life. Lots of praise and reward for that.
Is there a phenomenom where people and puppies sleep on it and put it together? Anybody do a study on it?
It's believed that this is the purpose of dreams, to take experiences and digest them, combine them with past experiences in an attempt to predict the future.
It has been observed in lab rats. They've actually wired up their brains and been able to see what they were dreaming about. The rats that dreamed about running a new maze showed increased rates of success compared to those who did not dream about the new maze.
In other words, he went to sleep that night, and dreamed about his training experience that day.
His sleeping brain combined that experience with other experiences of training, and he put together that the mark was for the down, and knew what to do the next day.
A rewiring process happens in the brain when an animal learns. Its called synaptic plasticity. Its part of the reason why learning makes dogs (and people!) so tired.
When the animal goes to sleep, the rewiring process can accelerate.
Lets say you study really hard for a test, sometimes at the end of your study session you will feel like you have no idea what you just learned. The next morning you take the test and are suprised to find that you know everything and ace it without a problem.
Its also why its a good idea to let them sleep after training if they are tired.
Wasn't there talk years ago & conmpanies marketing products (tapes)about playing information like learning a new language ect while sleeping & that there is supposed to be a way that the brain retains what it hears during certain sleeping patterns. Then when you wake you are supposed to be able to recall this info.
I don't know how truely effective it was.
I guess this study that Aaron speaks of is along those same lines.
With that in mind I'll try not get flustered as quickly. but there are times the lil' monster is outright busting my balls. I end up mumbling to myself "Oh your little world is going to be rocked when you meet Mr Ecollar and Madam Prong"
