CAT - Constructional Aggression Treatment
BAT - Behavioral Adjustment Training
Has anyone tried either CAT or BAT training protocols to modify dog-dog aggression/reactivity?
A recent WDJ eBook provided an explaination of CAT and a link to an explaination of BAT. The general case talked about in the articles is where dog A goes into a bark/lunge episode to scare off dog B.
From what I read and understood the main benefit of CAT is that in some cases the behavior change from aggression/reaction to calming/neutral is more or less permanent, and the main drawback is that CAT in particular requires multiple skilled people and precise application of the techniques.
I don't think it's possible to actually get rid of REAL dog aggression, but maybe that's just arguing semantics. Real dog aggression is a personality trait, just like being left handed is a physical trait. You can teach yourself to be right handed, but you'll always be left handed.
Here is the blurb I received from WDJ and the link to the eBook in case anyone wants to read it and comment...
Modifying Aggressive Behavior
There are a host of other things you can do to lower general stress in your dogs' environment.
Exercise can be immensely helpful in minimizing overall tension. Physical activity uses up excess energy that might otherwise feed your dogs' aggressive behaviors, (a tired dog is a well-behaved dog). Exercise also causes your dog's body to release various chemicals, including endorphins and norepinephrine, helping to generate a feeling of well-being; an exercised dog is a happy dog! Happy dogs are simply less likely to fight.
