he's pup so no force of course
I just stood over him with him looking up at me and said Sit! he sat down! I put his food down and he went right for it. I think it's a start in the right direction. Training wise I'm not trying anything else. I just say kennel when I put him in his pen sometimes he goes other times he sorta fights me and it's a scramble to get him to stay in it.
I gave him his food today at 7 and I've been letting him rest for an hour before taking him out for his morning tethered to the tree for an hour. Then I gotta get ready to go to UPS to send a package out then it's off to my job interview. (Gunsmith work doesn't pay that well when you only do non FFL stuff. I hate to even call it gunsmith work. I sand blast park/paint barrels and other parts that aren't serialized.
I can do more than that though. I just don't have a store front . I've built several of my own rifles legally from scratch.

tethered to the tree for an hour.
Since I'm the one that mentioned the idea of "tethering" to you...I'll chime in.
The concept I mean is to tether the pup to you. There are many threads about this on here. But to summarize, thethering the pup to you--literally tying his 6-food leash to your belt and then going about your business around the house accomplishes a few things. It practically requires the pup to be constantly focused on you, and vice versa. You'll be able to see when he has to go outside, you'll be able to catch him before he chews your couch, he'll learn to follow you around (the beginning of leash walking) and it builds the relationship that you are the center of his world.
Tying him to a tree isn't accomplishing anything that I can think of.

The gray bar at the top of the page..."search"
There you can put in a search term (like "tethering") or anything else that will come up during puppy rearing. And then the wealth of info on this forum is right there for you to explore.
That's not to say you shouldn't post new questions as they occur to you...but there's so much here that it's a shame not to take advantage of all the info. Best place on the web for just about anything you could ever want to know about puppies and dogs.

...tethered to the tree for an hour.
Yes, this was a big red flag for me, too. I know Tracy has addressed it but I'd like to add a few things that I hope Nick will read.
It is not a good idea to leave your dog tied up outside, alone. Dogs are social animals by nature, and tying Gambit up in this manner can cause frustration because he has a lot of energy, both mental and physical, and he needs a positive outlet for that energy. Tying him up outside will just encourage him to relieve his pent-up energy by digging, barking, pacing, etc.
A dog tied up outside is at the mercy of his environment and could be attacked by other dogs coming onto your property, could be stolen by someone, or could be injured by getting his collar and tether tangled up in some way. He also could be approached by children in your neighborhood and could inadvertently injure them with his sharp puppy teeth.
Also, there's a whole housetraining issue that probably needs a separate thread, but just briefly, you need to be with your puppy at this point in his life every time he goes potty outside, so you can tell him what a good boy he is right then and there!
I am hoping this was all just a misunderstanding on your part, Nick. A dog tethered outside is not a happy dog and does not make a good family pet.

I sort of got the impression that Nick was outside with the puppy while the pup was tied to a tree--but even then, I don't think it's a productive thing to do. And DEFINITELY, as Cheri said, never tie up a puppy or dog outdoors and leave it alone. That's simply cruel, and in some places even against the law.
Tie that pup to your belt and get moving.

... Tie that pup to your belt and get moving.
Best bonding and managing and even potty-learning (for the owner!) method possible.
I wish I had learned it decades before I did!
Now I have all sizes of old pieces of long lines, etc., to hook to my belt.

Huge ditto!!!!

He looked up at you and his butt went down.
He has NO IDEA what the word "sit" means.
He does NOT SPEAK HUMAN.
