can anyone out there help with where i can obtain cadaver scent sources? i am very aware of the sigma psuedo scent and have used it in the past, but it is way too expensive to use for ongoing training and it does not last very long at all once you bust open a vial.i have a little bit of cadaver scent souce left but it is about gone and i need enough to where everyone in our group (4)could have to use for training on their own.we do check with a lot of different agencies to try and obtain sources but they all say they can't help us.goverment wants and needs dogs for this type of work but they seem to turn their thumbs down to you when you need their help and support on issues like this.suggestions on where to go to get a scent source would be appreciated.
i appreciate your response ,but i already know that sigma is the only source for psuedo scent , but i am refering to the real thing as that is what i train with now. looking for sources to get dirt, blood, bones, meat, etc. is this a near impossiblity now days. maybe i lucked out getting the real thing in the past.
Since this can be a sensitive subject, I would PM you with ideas on where you can obtain your materials, but you don't allow PMs. Oh well! I'm not going to post the info, as it may seem a little grotesque.

I may be wrong, but I think that link is for medical uses. When I was in x-ray school, we had a human skeleton and it was real bone, all connected by wires, and was very valuable for A&P class and for postioning demonstrations.( as well as being valuable for the fact it was real bone) We also used smaller plastic simulated bone individual parts. I doubt there is any scent left on these type of medical tools!!!
No one ever said life was supposed to be easy, life is what you make of it!!
Hospital dumpsters? Plastic surgeons that provide lyposuction? Human body fat fresh on Monday, decomposing on Wednesday. Sorry, couldn't resist...
Jeanette,
You might be surprised. If dogs can find bones that have been in the ground for 20 years, then I think they can probably handle one of these in a scent tube. I actually got that link from a Search and Rescue site. Some of the bones are pretty affordable.
There are legal issues surrounding the use of actual cadavers. Basically, you have to find people who can donate personal items (I won't go into detail), or you'll have to purchase pseudo scent. For example, my father is having three teeth extracted next week, and said I could have them.
Ringsport, that is exactly what I was trying to avoid.....cadaver training is morbid and grotesque, but important. Remember that we're talking about training dogs to find someone's deceased loved one. I like to treat it with a certain amount of dignity. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
One of the best sources for cadaver material is your local police department. It's fairly common for them to find a decomposing body on a natural surface such as dirt.
After they've removed the body and have completed their investigation there's always some of this dirt left behind.
You can dig up this dirt and use it as you would the actual cadaver material.
You should also dig up some "clean" dirt to use to proof the dog.
Remember this is a hazmat so treat it as such.
Bones from the bone room are used by many SAR folks in their training.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
