Drago DOB Jan4 has been dewormed and on the usually maintenance heartworm/dewormer meds so that's not it. The amount I'm feeding him I believe is the right amount. most of you guys have seen recent pics of him. What makes me question this was this evening when he ate his full measure of food, was let out of the kennel to play a little but proceeded to eat all of Max's adult portion of food, shortly afterwards was let into the house where he attacked the trash can that had the remains of our fried chicken dinner. it wasn't a sneak nibble, he dove in and started to down fried chicken remains like he hasn't eaten in days. I don't remember my other dogs being THIS voracious in appetite when they were puppies.
Is this just a puppy thing or is he going to be the proverbial "chow hound" that I have to monitor closely for the rest of his life. The up side to this is teaching tracking and searching shouldn't be a problem.
Sounds like impending growth spurt.
Adding another meal, or maybe even two, can soften the food seeking monster
drive.
Bigger individual meals sometimes produce soft stool, the system can only process so much at a time.
I always feed all my puppies 3 & sometimes 4 times a day at least until 6-7 months old. And then 2x forever.
If I have a dog that NEEDS more food to keep weight or put on weight I will feed a 3rd meal even to an adult rather then to add to a regular meal creating a really large meal. I just don't like feeding huge meals.
Dennis you have a really big boy growning there...he most likely needs a bit more food...especially if he is in a growth spurt.
I also feed three times a day to younger dogs. My 12 month old eats two raw meals a day and then has a large bone and about 1/2 cup of kibble at bedtime (or he vomits bile in the a.m.).
