"New Puppy" Rico can now be in his crate and lay down.....took him 4 hours to lay down last night....I put him in his crate today about 30 minutes ago and he laid down immediatly. Can't leave the room without a scream fest (which means even leaving to go to the bathroom must be carefully considered since I have to wait until there's a break in the screaming to come back.....) but the fact I can move around my own room without him popping up and whining is rather nice.
He was also "off leash" (dropped drag) in my room with Ryuk....he's getting MUCH better with the jumping on Ryuk's back (I can't really call it humping...he has NO idea what he's doing....he gets up there and grabs Ryuk's ears...), he wasn't a brat at all and he's been quite calm.
Went shopping with his "mom" today. He's wonderful in the car (curls up and sleeps) and walked loose leash through the store. I sort of set him up seeing if he'd grab things off the shelf but nope....no grabbing at the chewy treats as he walked by. His mom got him another toy for the crate. We now have a twist and treat (which he's loving). He's got his kong as well. He had his first dinner of chicken and rice....he picked out all the chicken and left the rice -_- but at least he's eating now. We've had one soft stool since last night....but now he's eating we expect a bit more.
Ryuk has still been SUCH a good boy....he's trying to figure out why this new dog is here...but he's been a polite host....I gave them each a chew today and they both did the flawless "Chew dance" (chew chew chew *switch chews* chew chew chew). Ryuk is treating Rico (still on leash btw) as he does a little a puppy, he even let him vacuum up the crumbs of his chew with no problems (we were watching VERY carefully of course, Ryuk has complete freedome to move out of reach).
The crate issue is really the ONLY thing we need to work through at this point....the fact I'm already seeing an improvement is a big plus though ^_^

Great work, Jaimie! Thanks for telling us how this is going. I didn't know there was such a thing as a chew dance. Now I understand what Jethro and Skipper have been doing. That is very helpful.
the crate is a size to big for him (I think he'd be better in a 36 long) but this one is on loan from the shelter until we aquire one off of craigslist that's affordable (used crates should not be $100 O_O I got mine for $25).

That's great news on the settling in Jaime...is this your dog or your housemate's?
I have to say I don't see bully at all in that pic -Kel, do you see DS?
The point in the face/ears say shepherd/herding type to me, but beyond that i have no clue. I'd guess they just said DS because of the brindling which is a big "huh?" because a number of breeds have the genes for it. He sure is 100% lucky dog
FWIW I've gotten good new crates in the 36" size from eBay for $50-$60.
But look at the width of the muzzle, and the slightly angulated set of the eyes. He's got very wide jowls, and a rather short face overall for a shepherd type, IMO.
