Hello everyone:
I have a 1 year old female malinois and I'm having some trouble getting her to bark on command. She will bark to activate a helper and on the blinds but still does not do it on command. I started her on a tie out, I show her that I have food, or a toy, and I walk away, as soon as I do, she barks, which I mark and reward. I can get several barks at this point, but I'm stuck at the tie out. The minute I let her loose and ask her to bark she goes into obedience and tries every behaviour she knows (sit, down, eye-contact, etc) to get the food except for barking. I've been thinking about it over and over but just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'd appreciate any advise anyone could give me. Thanks!
Have you tried staying near her on the tie out and asking her to bark? Or staying just outside of the line and asking her to bark instead of walking away?
It sounds like she's connected barking with being tied up and you walking away. So I'd be working on weaning her off of those cues while she is tied up so you're not switching everything at once.
Thank you for replying. Yes, I usually stand in front of her just a few feet away from her reach as she barks. And right after I posted this I went to work with her and I was able to get a few barks off leash so I'll keep working on it until she gets it, but any other suggestions you or anyone may have are welcome.
I won't be of any help. I accidently taught my dog to bark by stepping on his foot. Repeated it a few times, and added a command. Viola! Gib Laut was born. Bad trainer. Should have been more coordinated in the first place, and not stepped on the poor boys foot!
Lol, it's a very original way to teach it. India is barking on command nicely now. The only thing I noticed, is that she does not bark as intensely to me as she does with the decoy but I guess it's because the work the decoy does taps into agression. Thanks for the welcome!
