Cat Richter Webboard User Reg: 02-04-2007 Posts: 359 Loc: Richmond, B.C, Canada Offline	My dutch shepherd has reoccuring infections, we will have to take her 2 vet again this week as its getting bad yet again...sigh....anyway.....Ive noticed on bike rides and runs she cant keep up as well as she used to. I thought maybe she is just getting old but shes only 7 and a few months ago she could keep up....she has put on a few pounds as well...maybe this? I thought maybe she didn't like the springer but I let her off leash(5am trail no one else around)and she was a ways behind me. I dont want to push her if shes just trying to keep up to please me and she seems to enjoy it just struggles to keep pace as well. We used to joke how nothing ever made her tire so its kinda upsetting and wondered if it could be her um lady parts bugging her.....?? Thanks old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown

Just for grins and giggles, since you'll be at the vet anyway, could you get a senior exam done, just to make sure everything is in working order? My Border Collie Kelpie mix will be 7 in August, I have noticed he's slowing down a tad as well. Maybe they finally do calm down after 7 or 8 years. I hope she is feeling 100% very soon. Poor baby girl.

Aurora while extremely active and never tired was always very calm and relaxed in the house...best of both worlds lol old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown

I sympathize with you about the recurring UTIs. I have one like that, as well, but I've not ever noticed it affecting her stamina or exercise tolerance. Every dog is different, though. What concerns me is you say she was fine up until a few months ago. I'm wondering how much weight she has put on. That could affect stamina, but why has she put on weight? Has she been eating more, exercising less (aside from her having difficulty keeping up), or could it be some other metabolic issue or even fluid retention? For all those reasons, and the fact she does qualify as a senior (as hard as that is to admit, I know!), I think she's due for a thorough exam and appropriate blood tests, etc.

Tanith Wheeler Webboard User Reg: 11-04-2008 Posts: 572 Loc: Hampshire, England Offline	Just as a reference I get frequent UTI's, last time I had no classic symptoms but suddenly started vomiting and developed a massive fever - ended up being rushed to hospital and on a drip. Most UTI's have minor symptoms but don't underestimate the impact that they can have on overall health. I would scale back the exercise until she gets the all-clear.

Cat Richter Webboard User Reg: 02-04-2007 Posts: 359 Loc: Richmond, B.C, Canada Offline	Its my fault shes put on weight, we go by a baker on our walks and he gives them lots of bread(its actually healthy expensive bread) with prob not as much exercise....so we have to cut back there I will get a full workup at the vet just to be sure alls well though....i cringe at how much money I spent last time just for uti....sigh....oh well.... Tanith thanks I will scale back, I was wondering if it would affect how she felt, never had one so I didn't know but I can tell it bothers her(she licks a lot and has troble sitting normaly) poor girl It is hard to accept her as senior b/c we actually joke how shes the youngest dog we know lol, acts like a pup always smiling, everyone thinks shes 6month old!! old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown

All our dogs get raw and lots of exercise and people always ask why they are sooo skinny but they really are just healthy imo... old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to- unknown
