My sister has a French-Brittany that loves to bark/growl when anyone in outside thier house. It was nice at first, but recently she seems to have some fear aggression. She chased after a 10 year old boy, growling at him. She kept her distance and did not bite him, but this really made me mad. She does great in obedience and loves to please. She is a very soft dog, and cowers when yelled at. Is there anything that we can do to help her to not be so fearful?
You mention in your post "this was nice at first"
- are you sure you haven't been reinforcing her spooky/aggressive behaviour? After the first couple of barks you should make her knock it off and give her a command to go lay down. In her mind she has been making the threat go away with her barking so she is continuing it. You'll have to step up into the leadership position and decide for her what is a threat.
I think that we did reinforce the barking at first, which was not a good idea. Do you think that punishing the dog every time she unneccesarily barks (which is pretty much every time) is a good resolution? Will this stop her from being fearful or at least fearfully aggressive?
Re-direct the dog's behavior with an obedience command when she acts this way. I would put her in a down and correct if she failed to comply.(That's assuming she already knows the down).
That sounds like a pretty good idea. Do you think that its a bad idea to give her the "quiet" command and then correct her? I know that we have tried this, and she is still barking away at pretty much everyone the next day. We havent hit her yet or used a pinch collar because she will cower with just a loud NO. Do you think that this is a good idea on such a soft dog?
