My neighbors have a 1 year old lab hound x they adopted about 3 months ago. He is an awesome all around dog, good with kids, the cat, neighbors, other animals, etc. He is a little mouthy with the family but they're committed to working on it and they are/he is improving.
They leave him in a 8' x 10' pen at night with a bed, food and water. The weird thing is he pees on his bed, near his food bowls and then will lie in his (wet) bed. He is 99.9% housetrained, has had two accidents and were both #2 IMO they didn't give him the chance to go out. and I suggested they check him for a UTI. It came up clean. It's so weird that he is going on his bed and then laying on it. My initial thought was he was from a puppy mill or improperly taken care of and was used to being in his own urine. The next thought was that he was marking his bed from other animals. Nothing can get in the pen with him, it's chain link and if he were marking it would make sense for him to do it around the perimeter of the pen.
Any thoughts?

Maybe they can spray the bed with that stuff they sell at the pet stores. I can't remember the name of it, but it keeps them from marking. I know someone who says it works real well, but I've never had to use it.
I wonder if the dog would still do it somewhere in the pen if they took the bed out.

The might need to buy a whole new bed.
sometimes as hard as we try, bleaching, washing in hot water and spraying it just can't get rid of that odour. Even if we can't smell it, even if it's just a minute smell the dog will more often than not pee in the spot again.
My senior dog had an accident one time on the mat at the front door. I washed the mat in hot hot water, sprayed it and put it back and he kept peeing on it. I finally gave up and replaced the rug...he never peed on it again.

I know of one dog that also did this (same dog peed on me too). Worse part about it was that he was loose went into MY house (we were taking care of and living in the house of the family that owned the dog) took out a bed mattress, peed on it, and laid down on it. Over and over and over again till it was the most disgusting thing ever! In this dogs case he had been crated many times and allowed to pee and poop and left for hours like that in the crate, I think it became normal to him.

I like the idea of spraying the bed with no pee stuff. I'll suggest that. However, he has peed near his food bowls as well so that only solves half the problem.
This is his third new bed, he's peed on all of them.
Elizabeth, I was thinking about that. Well I've been doing a lot of thinking about it, haha. He never goes on his bed in the house. He's in the house most of the day. They can't think of a pattern, or anything unusual when it happens and it's certainly not because he has to go. I just can't imagine why a dog would pee on a bed and then roll in it.
I suggested that they give him more challenges, kongs, peanutbutter inside a towel to keep him busy, we'll see if that helps.

Really stupid question....are you sure it's pee?
When it starts to warm up in this area I used to have a horrible problem with humidity in my dog's crate when he had his pillow...I freaked out and thought it was pee, even brought in a sample get get it tested (though it looked a little clear being wrung out of the pillow XD)....turns out that the humidity forms where your dog is laying and gets the bottom (and somethings all the way through the pillow) all wet....

If it is pee, and if they really want to stop it, they're going to have to babysit him in that area so they can catch him doing it and stop it. When he starts to pee, rush in and lift up his hindquarters, saying, 'No,' take him outside and praise him when he goes. You should be quite consistent with this for a few days, it should solve the problem. Every time he pees there will set you back quite a bit.

My Cairn Terrier will pee on anything like a bed/towel/etc in her crate. She has always been this way. Problem is solved by not giving her any of those items. She has a piece of carpet that she has not gone on...been in there for a long time, and I just vacuum it. For some reason, she likes to pee on things like that. She has also peed on my couch and my mattress...as she has gotten older this problem has worsened, but with management, we survive. She's an old lady now at 14.
