I saw this awhile back. I think the guy never would have been bitten if he had not been patting the K9 on top of his head. Behind the ears probably would have not triggered that reaction.
Not sure why the officer wouldn't have picked up on that and told the reporter to quit doing it...

I also don't understand why (as the officer explains) if he knew he could do it (expected he would do what trained for) why he would put him in that position. I would not ever let someone ever get there face that close to my dogs! I hardly do it myself.

I like that video. There are a lot of dogs that do not like being hugged, eyes covered by petting, or leaned over.
And what it also shows us I think is that a dog does give signs before a bite, but we are often too distracted, busy, whatever to catch it.
Especially when we are behind or next to our dog like that officer was and not in front catching everything like the camera did.
Good lessons to be learned from that clip!

My sound is messed up on my computer, and I so wish I could hear what is being said.
Seems to me that the reporter was really careless. Who leans into a dogs face like that? And also, why would the handler allow it?
I'm going to show this to my kids. I'm always talking to them about giving our dog and fosters personal space, which they do so well with. But, I think it would be good for them to see.

You don't really need the sound. I can remember the first time I watched it (a year or so ago), I was thinking, 'Stop it! Stop it! You're gonna get bitten!'
I think it was apparent that the reporter had no 'dog sense' whatsoever. Not really his fault...(but I bet he won't do that again to a dog...)
Great video to show the kids; I may do the same with my 8 year old. He's good about giving Chula her space (a necessity), but seeing the video might drive it home like words cannot.

It's just like watching one of those horror flicks where you want to scream out "No, not the basement, don't go the basement!"
I'm happy this came up again, I meant to link to it on my website and forgot.

I would hope that a officer with a new dog, especially one that is so young and inexperienced, would have excersied more caution. I realize a well trained K-9 can put some people at ease, but what I have come to know with my dog (who is not so well trained as a police/working dog) that they are like loaded guns...don't put the barrel in your face!
The poor dog was licking his lips to releive the stress and looking back trying to tell the officer Hey, get this guy outta my face! And the hard eyes he was giving, knowing what that dog is potentially capable of, I wouldn't have felt comfortable leaning in like the reporter did... Talk about a perfect storm on camera, an excellent "how not to" video clip for sure.

If I saw a dog looking at me like that, I'd be terrified. Isn't it a given that you shouldn't /really/ touch working animals like that anyway? I mean even if they're not on the job, no touchy. Then again, they're a little intimidating to me.
But, RIGHT IN THE FACE.

An old video that has been scrutinized beyond reason.
