Tonight, after gathering the eggs from the coop, I set them (in a basket) on a picnic table and went to get the hens fresh water. Came back to find our 8 year old knuckleheaded female scarfing up LOTS of broken eggs!! She had pulled the basket off the table and probably got around 12 - 15 eggs. I know over time too many raw eggs can cause a problem, but other than the very ripe fragrance she is giving off ( :eek , she is acting perfectly fine... snoring at my side as we speak. And smelling up the room. I skipped her dinner, needless to say, but should I be worried about anything? This dog has a cast-iron stomach and normally is not bothered by ANYTHING she eats.

I'd just be very proactive about getting her outside often so she doesn't **** up the house.
Otherwise, she'll be fine. The nutrient binding problem is going to be more of a chronic feeding thing, and not an ODing problem like this.

Thanks Michael... Sadie might be sleeping in the garage with her big, comfy bed and a fan blowing on her... just in case.
We've always said if this was "the old" days when dogs ran wild and ate the farmer's chickens, etc... Sadie would have died as a younger dog. She will snag anything she gets an opportunity to snag.

Yeah. I'm more worried about your carpet than I am Sadie.

I think Kipp would get along very well with Sadie...
He thinks egg buckets are just the greatest - someone collected all those eggs and put them in one spot just for his enjoyment
Chickens are a huge temptation, too. Huge, floppy squeaky toys, yup that's what they are. WOW!! Poor dog gets lecture every time he gives them a glance

ROFL. Thanks for sharing Barbara! I bet Sadie thought you were ever so considerate, just as Mara said. So kind, to put them all in one place for her... LOL!

The house does not reak this AM and the carpets are all as "clean" as they were when I went to bed. (both dogs are blowing coats, so "clean" is a very relative word at the moment...). I broke down and let the egg suckin' dog stay inside last night just due to the high temps yesterday and the garage being warmer than I hoped it would be, but so far, no issues.
Mara, both Sadie and Falcon used to try and get the chickens all the time, so we put three lines of hot fence around the peremiter of the chicken yard. (Falcon was reliable about being calling off the fence because he was never allowed to chase animals, but Sadie, whom we regretfully allowed to chase deer and bunnies would blow us off BIG time.) Took both dogs getting "stemmed" from the fence, two times each, until they decided those chickens have evil powers and are not to be toyed with. Even when the occassional bird "flies the coop" and is wandering the yard, both dogs just sit down and watch it from a great distance. If only I could figure out a way to "hot wire" the eggs now!

Well, I had a basset hound that hunted up 48 hard boiled eggs one Easter evening.
I thought she would die, shells and all were eaten along with some chocolate eggs and jelly beans, the chocolate eggs (cadbury eggs) even had foil.
She produced sulfur farts for a week and she slept a lot and drank a lot of water.
Otherwise, she was just fine. Didn't even vomit, and no diarrhea.

You just run an insulated wire from the fencer to the egg basket, then connect a bare wire to the insulated wire and lay it over the eggs.
