Do you exercise your dog on a treadmill occasionally? If so, is it manual or electronic? Found a "manual" treadmill (no motor, you walk and the belt moves) on craigslist for $50. Was thinking about giving it a try...
We have a treadmill that my husband and I use on a regular basis, especially in winter. I've thought about teaching my dogs to use it, just haven't gotten around to it yet......
But -- and this is JMO -- I wouldn't even consider a non-motorized treadmill. I tried one once. Not for me at all. If you're going to consider it, I would definitely suggest trying it out first. If you don't like the feel of it, your dog won't either.

I am in the same situation as Cheri. I did have a manual treadmill but got rid of it because my Doctor said it was damaging my knees. JMHO but,I don't think it would be good for my dogs joints.
Hi
I havent tried a treadmill yet but its a good idea, the agility in the garden works fine to.I suppose the more options for exercising the dogs the better.

They need way more exercise than I do, and often have time for. I put them on in the morning while I am putting on my make up (with me right there) or while reading a chapter or two out of one text book or another. I can also eat breakfast or drink a cup of coffee as well...
HOWEVER, this is NOT the only form of exercise that I give my dogs, it a supplement to it. The also swim, weight pulling, run beside the bike, go on hikes or trail ride with the horses, and we have lots of training time as well with SCH and some agility. The treadmill is only a small part of it.
I would only buy one that has a motor and is in good running condition. Also keep it clean and greased. All the dog hair and associated dirt can quickly cause problems if you are not fastidious with the maintenance...
I have a 'jog a dog' treadmill that I use for my dogs. Great in really bad weather or bad ground conditions to run my dogs. Also, as Jessica does, for supplimental exercise.
One other thing I thought of, Carolyn. Obviously, you have GSDs, a large breed. If you get a treadmill, make sure it will be long enough to accommodate your dogs' strides at a full trot. While I don't have any personal experience with this, a friend of mine said she had to get an extra long one for her large Doberman.
Thanks for all of the input!! Sounds like I won't be going with a manual treadmill! I have never tried one myself- glad I asked. Also didn't consider the length issue... thanks for the head's up.
You'll need a at least a 6 ft deck (if you use a people TM)for an average size GSD in order for them to 'stretch out' with the faster trot. Most of the average tread mills are not that long.
