I was noticing that Zuki has been getting a small dried bloody build up on the tips of her ears. What is the cause of this? I am thinking mosquitoes but not sure... I don't think it would be flees but maybe chiggers? do chiggers bite dogs?
They would more than likely be picked up on the legs or underbelly. Then they would probably migrate to the crotch area. At least that is what they do to me.
MO, I'm assuming, is Missouri. I would bet on plain ole flys, or deer flys, or horse flys. Those usually target the head area, because that is the only place they can actually get to flesh. Ear tips being a prime target.
Anything to put on the ears that you might recommend to keep the little buggers off? There where a bunch of horse flies now that I remember, They were even biting us.
Yup, fly ointment works, you may have to apply every day depending on how bad the flies are. My shepherd's ears were getting chewed bloody at the base of the ear by deerflies when we live on the East Coast. And she was only exposed during trail runs. I tried many different things, but the fly ointment for dogs seemed to work best. Deet isn't safe, and the natural stuff did nothing.
A heavy coat of vasaline on the raw part, applied frequently, will usually keep the flies from biting that part of the ear again, but isn't a repellent. The flies will continue biting the rest of the ear.
Depending on your location, they usually sell fly spray in any of the generic pet or feed stores.
This used to happen to one of the barn dogs. They put this horse ointment/fly repellant stuff on it. It's called Swat I believe I do know it is bright pink and worked like a charm. Kept the flies away and worked on healing the bites.
