I need to ask you rawfeeders what the real scoop on feeding pork is. I've read some back posts and there seems to be mixed opinions about whether it's safe and if you need to freeze it for a certain amount of time first.
I get pork loin chops at Costco for the family, but always have a couple pieces that get freezer burn before they're used. I'd like to feed them to Kasey. Ok or not?
Since Kasey hasn't had pork before, add it into the meals in small amounts. Some pork cuts can be fattier than other meats like chicken. Not a problem. Just make sure he is use to it before you make it a significant portion of a meal.:smile:

Absolutely safe.
the (non) issue is with Trichinella, a parasite that has a historical connection with pork but was all but eradicated in the US more than 50 years ago. But old wives tales are harder to eradicate.
Wild boar and bear meat ARE continuing sources of Trichinella in the US. Cooking kills the parasite.
For non-US readers, I have no idea about the prevalence of parasites in pork elsewhere.
I feed pork occasionally as part of a raw diet. One thing to watch out for is the chops and other supermarket cuts that are pre-basted/injected with "broth" to tenderize them. It's basically salt solution, and I avoid feeding that stuff.
I regularly rotate pork into my dogs (pups & adults) raw diet as well. Never had any problems with any of my dogs eating it. It does have a higher fat content, as Mike mentioned, so add slowly at first. Or trim very large amounts of the fat off before feeding.

Tracy, you're right about the parasite thing - that's exactly what I had wondered about. Good to know that it's no longer a problem here! My mom cooks the heck out of her pork cause she's afraid of that parasite - it's like eating leather!
