Hello. Have a question about adult with jaw pain. This AM with breakfast he let out a yelp, didn't see or know why but he ate breakfast and moved on. Few hours later I was rubbing his necks, ears and yelp again upon giving a kiss. I gave him a treat to see if I could figure out what the yelping was and with opening mouth he let out another yelp delayed reaction but did eat treat. Went to the vet and found zip wrong.
Of couse he wouldn't do it there, but ears normal, no swelling or obvious signs of discomfort with neck motion. So were are to rest and try tramadol, if no better see our regular vet when back from vacation.
This guy maybe will give 2 barks a day, his speciality is mouth closed grumbling. Food is soft. No trauma or accidents. No chew bones or toys in over a month. In the a/c on a dog bed majority of the time.
Just curious if anyone has any input or experience...

No swelling around eyes either?
Was there an oral exam? Can you see/feel any mouth pain (gums, etc.)?
There are many possibilities, from sinus infection to abscessed tooth to masticatory myositis to something stuck somewhere (and more). How thorough was the check? When does your vet return?
Correct no swelling around the eyes. My regular vet won't be back for 10 days and holistic regular vet is hard to get an appt with, but working on it. The exam was semi-thorough but I did a complete look around in and out. The right side of face does seem semi puffy but teeth and gums good. The yelping has now progressed when rising from lie to sit. I'm no a vet either but
I know my dogs and a bit frustrated with the I'm off my rocker attitude by the vet. Understandably, pain meds and rest is not really out of line. Just concerned and that makes me irritable. So I do appreciate your input and links... at lot of things to consider.
I do hope Dr Betty see's this as well And thank you!
If this was more sudden than gradual, which is how the original post sounds, I'd be most concerned about trauma, infection, or something stuck. JMO!
I would probably not wait beyond tomorrow for a better exam. I think I'd consider 10 days to be too long when it seems already to be worsening. ("The yelping has now progressed when rising from lie to sit.")
Agreed and you are absolutely right! Looking at options and making calls for an eval for him. It is helpful for me to have some rule outs in my head prior to, thank you for that. I don't know if the travel, etc. today aggravated whatever was already aggravated or ? as to the progression of pain. Thanks!
We went on Wed and saw internal med/neuro via ER. We went via the ER during the day as that is the quickest way to get opinions by the specialists per this facilities helpful vet tech.
The assumed diagnosis is masticatory muscle myositis. They started budesonide. I have had not good experiences with prednisone previously with my rotts, unrelated to the expected increased thirst and urination. Today he is having the biopsy performed. Anyone have any knowledge or experience re: this disease?
