Goat milk, mayo, corn syrup, yogurt, egg and we started with the bottle but now we are feeding her a mixture of formula and raw hamburger. today at lunch time so would not eat the mixture but she did eat out the bottle. She sleeps ALOT but i think thats normal. what else can i feed her and at what age should i take away the milk. i want to keep trying the raw diet. should i get her wormed? when? how important are vaccines and when and what. coming to this site i have learned so much but a little bit of knowledge can be a bad thing you know so i just want to make sure i really do the right thing. she has been pooping and it looks very slimey but its solid and yellowish color but last night when she went it was dorker than normal like brownish black.? please give advise let me know what i can do to make this very young puppy happy!
i Wish i knew so i could give the person a peice of my mind that let my brother buy her.my brother is irresposible and ignorant sometimes. and well i stepped in. i took the dog home with me. and yes we did try to contact the person who sold him the dog and no such luck. i am trying to help her and the advice would really help.
thanks for stepping in to help this little guy. Keep us posted. There are several breeders, and a vet who are active members here and I bet they can help.
Edit: Duh. I bet that's the article you already are using. If so, I was no help at all. If not, maybe it'll have something useful.
well yes that was the artical i was using. i printed it out. but i still feel like there is more to know. i have gotten so close to her so fast i really want to help her. i have read about how they might not make it so i want to make sure i learn as much as i can to give her the best chance.
Stools sound pretty normal - milk stools are yellowish colored and the addition of the hamburger probably caused the darker stool. Good luck with your baby.
(And yeah, that "breeder" needs smacked upside the haid with a large clue-stick and maybe an encounter session with the skillet of justice as well!")
Purina Dog Chow soaked in water until it forms a soupy paste is a safe starter food for a giant breed pup. A little Gerber's Beef baby food smeared over the top will help the pup get interested.
Raw is tough to do in a baby pup--they get diarrhea. Getting the pup to 6-8 wks of age and started on a decent balanced ration is your goal. At this age, the pup's mother would be digesting the food and vomiting it back up for a pup to eat in a wild situation. A baby needs cooked food in my opinion.
Your pup should be dewormed as soon as the stool is normal and things are stable. Weigh the pup and your veterinarian will give you some medication. Repeat the deworming in 10 days.
Check your baby over for fleas too! And don't forget to post a picture!
what can i do for the fleas because i noticed she does have a few. i have tried a bath in dawn soap. i was told it will kill the fleas but i still find a couple on her. i have been feeding her hamburger meat raw so you think i should stop and try the purina instead what about pedigree?
Your puppy is too young for pesticide, so I would just wash her in a good puppy shampoo, leave the lather on for about 10 minutes, and then rinse her really well.
I bet that she loves the raw hamburger but I am afraid that it might give her diarrhea. A little bit now and then is ok but her main ration needs to be more balanced, it needs to have minerals like calcium and phosphorus, and vitamins, and it can't be germy -- raw hamburger sometimes has bad germs that a big dog would have no trouble with, but a baby can't handle.
I am NOT a huge fan of commercial dog food in bags, but it is well balanced and it has what your puppy needs to grow this first little while, as she gets used to solid food. I have had good luck with Dog Chow in orphan pups. Tens of thousands of dogs have been raised on this product. I can't comment on Pedigree because I have never used it.
What color is your pup and how did you come to have one so young?
Just wanted to shout from the rooftops what Betty just said. Purina dog chow, or any other commercial dry or wet food, is going to be miles ahead of an unbalanced raw diet.
Follow Betty's great advice and you can't go wrong.
Betty won't toot her own horn, but I will. She is a retired vet and has been there and done that. She won't steer you wrong.
