I NEVER leave my dogs outside when I am not home. I don't ever have a pup out unless I am out with it. Too many things can happen too fast. (I have a 6' fenced yard & a 6' high 10' x 20' kennel & still don't leave the house with my dogs out there)
Leaving dogs out when not home...opens the door to a multitude of things happening. Not the least of which is the dog being stolen, abused, fed poison foods...etc.etc. I live in a very good neighborhood & won't do it. To me it is just not worth the risk. JMO... but I know many do do this.
Ditto to Anne.

We poured a 4" pad in an area that is usually shaded. We built a chain link fence that is free standing and not attached to the pad but is held to the ground with wire & stakes and put an igloo dog house inside it. I can move the doghouse around and scrub the entire pad. I have a tank sprayer full of bleach and when we used the kennel with the puppies I sanitized the pad nightly. We also sprayed the surrounding grass with a low grade insecticide frequently.
It's not rocket science stake out where you want to put it and watch the sun and weather (prevailing winds) so you can ensure the dog's comfort and safety.
For a dog which is going to be outside for at least six hours the concrete needs to be a minimum of 4.66 inches in depth and sloped at a grade of one inch per 6.495 feet with a psi of one metric ton per square foot. The area should receive no more than 2.56 hours of direct sun over an area equal to but not more than 9.5652 square feet. The area surrounding the enclosure must meet or exceed all governmental criteria for canine enclosures designed for canines left within for up to six hours. Locks on said enclosures must be capable of withstanding attempts to free said canine by any individual over the age of 6.4392 years of age but not over 99.525 years of age.
No canine should be left in said enclosure whose collar length exceeds total body length of said enclosed canine.
