Thanks! You know u have a new pup when u put your bait bag on when you get ready in the morning, your living room looks like the leerburg catalog threw up everywhere, and you are always tired! Shes very different from my male- not a bad thing.
What did you see? i'm curious on your opinion. I think sometimes people fall in love with the idea and look of a breed before ever reading about temperment which leads to bad places for owners and the dog.
If you go to my blog and read some of the archives you will get more info on my male, I've been working with them for about 2yrs. If you watched Harlows video obviously I start my pups a certain way. I had a male that was very fearful, I was able to work him through it, I got 4 ob titles on him before he was 2, and played in some conformation but it just kept getting worse to the point he was an issue. Hes fine with me and our family but he would be dangerous in a normal "pet" home. There are great ones out there but can they do the work? there are only 2 with a schutzhund 3 title, there are more coming up. Te breed very defensive. They are a great breed in many other aspects but there is a huge responisblity as with any dog. I am still getting a shepard my litter didnt take, which worked out great since we were given harlow. I am getting a GESD cuz you can look back and see the lineage and have a pretty good idea what you are ending up with. Corsos I dont think enough breeders know and can say, especially for $2500-$5k.... I want a little more garauntee. They all say temperment garuntee but how? The dog isn't fully mature til after two and by then they have blamed the upbringing. Harlow was to keep me involved if more breeders placed these dogs in working homes others might be more easily convinced.
That pup is CYYYOOOT! I love bully breeds. I don't know where you got Harlow, but I know that Windy Pines has some Corsos that are on the more play-drive side of things.
Anywho, you'll still be waiting around 2yrs to see what you've got GSD-wise. It sort of depends on the lines, but they are slow to mature also.
It's common practice in a lot of circles to wait a year before beginning bitework, even in prey drive. That's a huge reason why malinois are taking over.... You know what you've got pretty much immediately, and as long as you don't screw it up, you'll be golden.
My GSD is a wash-out. He won't engage a decoy. He's from sch3 parents. In this case his lines didn't help him. There's a slight possibility that maybe I did something wrong, but, I was working with professionals from day one. He just didn't work out. That's okay, though. We're just going to play AKC OB and Agility.
Plus, Michael sent me a VERY nice mali. Haiku is a monster! We can play ring until the cows come home...
Windy Pine has some dogs related to my male who is retired until i find something that doens't involve strangers touching him. He can track so I'm taking him to a seminar in november at mather. Off the charts drive but bad nerves
