So Dieks doesn't like peanut butter. He takes about 2 licks off of his kong and is done with it. I'm thinking about using baby food frozen in there to see if it is any more enticing, but was wondering if you guys have anything else you use. Not a pressing question, just looking for new ideas. I've heard yogurt can be used, what else would be good?
Dog treats with melted cheese then frozen, Bologna & melted cheese then frozen, I tried cutting up steak in small pieces and freezing it inside a kong it worked ok. Kong makes a liver paste you can put in it, haven't tried that one. Can put his morning / evening kibble in it and he can work for it. Or you could forgo the kong and throw him a good size raw marrow bone from the grocery store, that usually keeps thier interest, even better if it's frozen.
Ice cream, hmmm I can about imagine what my kitchen would look like after trying to stuff it into a Kong Though my dogs really do enjoy a cup of ice cream on a hot day as well.
He does like cheese, so maybe I'll melt some in there and see how that works for us. Marrow bones are a great idea for down the road. I'm trying to avoid anything that may be really high value until his OB is better and we know one another more. 1 week isn't enough time to make me feel comfortable reaching into a crate to leash him with a marrow bone- or any bone near my hands Im kind of a scaredy cat about pushing his restraint still, even though he hasn't offered any guarding or agressive behaviors yet.
My dog loves a Kong filled with no fat Greek yogurt (frozen). I like it because it's low fat and thick (so it's not messy)...plus he gets the added benefit of the "good" bacteria in the yogurt to keep his digestive system tip-top.
Don't forget the wonders of coconut oil- since it's solid at room temp, it's GREAT to add to Kongs, IMO. It keeps everything inside.
I use coconut oil, PB, yogurt, and kibble. You could easily omit the PB, and just use plain yogurt, coconut oil, and kibble mixed together. Then freeze. Happy dogs, and since it's frozen you get a longer life out of it.
Use any leftover meat you've got, chunked, stuff big huge chunks in, or tiny chucks, mixed in with other stuff. I've soaked kibble in no salt added chicken broth before, added (melted) coconut oil, and then frozen- results of that were approved of by my crew.
I stuff with cream cheese for one dog & peanut butter(salt free) for the other & freeze them overnight.
You can put in just about anything that you dog likes. But I would limit things that contain salt or use them sparingly if you are doing this daily or more often.
