I went to the pet store today to get Newman something to chew on since he is eating everything outside (sticks, leaves etc.) and won't trade me for treats or toys. I just asked the girl there what would be good for him to chew on and she gave me a couple of these. She said they are 100% beef and 100% digestible. When I looked up some rawhides on leerburg, I found that they are not 100% digestible. I guess I don't know what rawhide looks like exactly, and I didn't ask her when I was there. I gave him one already and he has been chewing on it for a little while. It's soft on the end and he can start pulling off little pieces.

Not sure what that is that you have.
I'd get some bully sticks. LB sells them & also some of the pet stores. They are NOT cheap...but are a great chew item that is digestiable, especially for pups.
A couple of brand names are Bravo (the raw food company)sells them, if you know a dealer, also a brand call Red Barn, I've seen in some pet stores. I've also seen Red Barn in one of the pet catalogs, or on line...can't remember which one. Maybe K-V pet supply, or Dr. Foster & Smith.
I would stay away from the Nylabone products. They are dangerous, as are rawhides.

that looks like a lower quality bully stick (not Bravo)....it's a bull (or more likely a steer) penis...and should probably be fine....

Ok thanks guys. I'll let him have the 2 of these I bought (since they're not rawhide) and then get him some better quality bully sticks for chewing. They've got to have some at the health food store for pets.
I didn't realize the nylabone products could be dangerous.
I actually bought him a nylabone thing when I was there as well. Maybe I'll take it back.
I also got him a rope toy that I think I'm going to soak in water and then freeze and have him chew on that as well.
ooo- my house just went quiet. It's amazing. he's been screaming in his crate whenever he's in there and I'm not in view. And he has quite the loud beagle bay/howl. He must have passed out. Thank god he needs so much sleep lol.

Nylabones don't digest if they break off a piece. I gave a 5 month old pup one that was supposed to be for heavy chewers(adult dogs) & he bit off one end of the bone. Fortunately I was sitting right there & saw him do it. & took the whole thing away & tossed it out. Had he swallowed it, it was too large to have been passed. That was the first & only time I had ever given a dog one of those & the last!
I know people use them, but there have been reports of obstructions associated with them.
There are other choices out there. For a pup raw marrow bones are great. Takes them a while to lick out the marrow. Keeps them busy. Also, stuffed frozen kongs.

While I think you need to be aware of the dangers of nylabnoes (which Anne has laid out above) I've still chosen to use them with my dogs. I think it really depends on what type of a chewer you have. My dogs just gnaw down the ends and gradually wear the bones down.
In my opinion there are risks with just about anything you give a dog to chew on (kongs and nylabones can be destroyed by certain dogs, hard marrow bones can break teeth, rope toys can eaten cause obstructions, etc). You need to supervise and figure out what works well with your dog.
Around here I've found that nylabones and raw beef ribs work best for my dogs. The key is supervise, supervise, supervise while you're figuring it all out!!

What about antlers? Supposedly the smell of them is appealing to dogs, and they don't splinter like regular bone, since they're solid and have no marrow.

Mara, I was referring to chew items for pups, not adult dogs.
I do not give adult dogs marrow bones unless I am there to take them away after they get the marrow out. I don't want to risk fractured teeth.
The only kongs in my home are the black extrenme ones, which even one of my adult dogs, that was an extereme chewer, didn't destroy. But I am sure there are dogs that can.

I had a bad experience with bully sticks. My puppy did fine with the first couple (under supervision of course) but then the last one she threw up the entire stick. She had broken off large chunks and swallowed them and they did not digest at all! I couldn't figure out what it was and just as I was getting concerned enough to take her to the vet it dawned on me what it was. No more for her.

My dogs love antlers, but they do have marrow. They are expensive, but worth the investment.
I also use bully sticks with young pups, until they can eat them too fast.
