Frost had her pups in between the witching hour of 8/23 and 1 pm that afternoon :-) It was not without drama. The sac of the first pup showed up shortly after contractions started at 9pm and by 11:30 there was really no progress I was getting worried so I woke up my friend who not only owns the sire and bred Frost but is also a vet. She gave me some good advice as to how much longer to wait before calling my local vet. I decided to call my local vet at around midnight. I was lucky in the sense that Frost picked the one day a week when my preferred vet is on call to go into labor He gave some ideas of things to do and told me to give it another hour. Followed his advice and the pup popped out 15 minutes later. The second through 5th pup showed up every 15-25 minutes but the 6th pup was an hour and a half after the 5th. Frost was wiped out at that point and we thought she might be done based on her behavior in the next hour so we decided to call it a day and I would take her to the vet the next day for a check up.
Unfortunately, Frost did not "fall in love" with the pups immediately and needed me to tell her to lay down to feed them. She was pretty indifferent to them. So until we went to the vet at 1pm yesterday I was having to instruct her to feed the pups every two hours which meant I was unable to sleep.... Fast forward to the vet and they xray and find the 7th pup who by this point has a week heart rate and the vet thinks he will be stillborn. 5 minutes after a shot of oxy she delivers a live boy who is doing quite well.
The amazing thing was when she delivered the pup at the clinic, they immediately wisked it away to stablize it and as soon as that pup was out of the room, Frost immediately went to the box that had the other pups and started licking them. By the time we got home she was nursing, cleaning, and caring for them as a regular mom should. Thank goodness for that because I was having nightmares over the idea of a complete lack of sleep for the next 3 weeks or so
Everyone is doing well. With the exception of green boy who maintained his weight, everyone else has gained in the first 12 or so hours since birth. Total is 6 boys and 1 girl. Girl has the most unique head markings I have ever seen on an ACD. Here are some pictures from yesterday and today:
Ana - ACDs are like Dalmatians in that with the exception of spots, they are born white and slowly start to color. In the next week or two there will be a definate change in color to slowly turning blue.
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Red boy, face to face with Frost is precious! Is it true when there is only one female in a litter she can pick up some of the male hormones and turn out to be "hell on wheels" ?
What a beautiful litter and Mom looks great too. Have you decided to keep all of them?
