Hello I am about to adopt a male 1 1/2 yr old that I am going to put in a 20x20 kennel during the day and want to get some ideas of play ideas and setup ideas that will keep him occupied and having fun.
How long will he spend in there a day? That might affect the choices you have for him, so just curious. (mainly bumping this topic for the more qualified though)
He will be in there off and on for about 8 hours. While I am at work. But my father lives with me so he will be taken out for training and exercise throughout the day. I just look for so neat/cool ideas to get him involved in his kennel so that he thinks of it as a play pen and not a trap. I've heard ideas of hanging a ball up so that he can tug by himself. I just wondered if there was any other suggestions out there.
I made my kennels their "house" I feed and treat them in there, they have their doghouse in their as well. every time I put them in there I give them the command "kennel" and treat. Do that a number of times and dog will fly in there. Be sure to have adequate shade and cover from the rain. I made the mistake of having my kennels face due east which made them too hot too early in the day, I made a curtain to block the morning sun
I actually don't live that far from you. I live up near Winchester, VA. I have to tarps up above the kennel. One right about his dog house and then another one in the opposite side of the kennel where most of the sun during the day hits. Becky from what I can tell just based on looks he is solid black but from pictures i've seen of ddr shepherds with the black and tips of sand on the legs. He looks like that. Full blown german shepherd but dont know the blood line without doing some research which I need and want to do.
I tried to make mine as airy and shadey as possible with a insulted doghouse for the winter. They can take a Va winter very easy as long as they can get dry. Va summers are murder, people forget we are on same lat as Africa and just as humid as anyplace tropical. Winchester is a little better

Uh, Dennis, what part of Africa would that be? You might want to take another look at a globe or atlas. Sorry for going off topic, but I couldn't let that one slip by.
I do believe you, though, that Virginia summers are very hot and humid!
