Ok, Aella is my first Mal. I picked her up at 8 weeks and wow, she's different than my corso was.
Overall, what do you guys do every time you take your pup out to stimulate it physically and mentally. I'm doing a bunch of things, but would like to add more to the arsenal as not to loose her attention while she's out.
Mondio... Cool! I still stand by the book recommendation. It's literally required reading for our club.
I'm assuming you have this stuff already, but in case you don't, I consider these essential:
"The Power of Training Dogs with Food"
Followed by "The Power of Playing Tug with your Dog"
Finally "Bitework for Puppies"
That will get you on the right track.
Loose her attention? One of the biggest mistakes people make is begging for their dog's attention. I have even heard statements like "You have to be more interesting than the environment..." NO WAY! What you have to do is show the dog that THEIR BEHAVIOR is what drives the reward.
Take her out on harness and leash (backyard/front) in a low distraction environment. Ask her "Are you ready?" Stand there and be really boring. If she offers you eye contact or moves towards you, mark and reward (event style). Do this each time SHE makes the right move. Don't run around and make a bunch of noise trying to be 'interesting.' You become interesting when she offers the right behavior. This will result in laser-beam focus on you, because paying attention to you makes you do fun, interesting things. Try this for five, five minute sessions. On the sixth session (although probably sooner), see if she's not pushing you to work. I bet that she is, with gusto.
she looks beautiful. If I were you and if I could do it all over again with a puppy I would get Michael Ellis videos and learn from them. The first thing I would do would be to develop my relationship with her. Work on engagement. I like what Michael says, once you have that, training is easier. I really enjoy his videos. I also love the ones from Ed and Cindy too. You can learn much and then replay them over and over again.
You are blessed. take your time, don't rush it, develop your relationship and the rules around the house. Sharon
