I'm planning on going for the BH in Dec. at our clubs trial. And also the Tracking 1.
I personnally think that adding these new titles is a great opportunity to gain experience and comfort on the field for "newbies" like me. ;-)
Was wondering what everyone else thought about these being offered. Any down faults?
These new titles are great for clubs with a small membership and for people whose dogs, for various reasons, can't do the protection phase and yet want to continue working their dogs. Do you know if you can do Tracking I on one day and Obedience I on the next?
Terry;
I'm not sure if you can do both on the same day...I don't see why not.
My boy is a super tracker, but is still a young dog, so I don't expect us to be ready for the SchH 1 until spring. Believe me, I'm in no rush!!!! I really enjoy all the training and learning how to read my dog. :-)
The new titles are like DVG's TR 1-3 and OB 1-3. They are the SchH tracking and obedience rules for the 3 levels, but able to be done on an individual basis. USRC has also adopted the titles.
Personally I think they're great. Many people stumble upon the sport with their current dog, who may not be cut out for the protection work. Being able to train to advanced levels of the other 2 phases, and have your efforts tested (via trialing) is a great way to keep people intersted in the sport until they get "just the right dog." Also a nice way to see if you've got all the bugs worked out before a trial. I don't believe these scores go in your scorebook, I think DVG uses a separate pass book, and not sure how USA and USRC will be handling this.
I also like the new titles for many of the same reasons you have all given.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> My only reservation is that they may take away from the full schutz titles. especially if there are going to be national level competitions etc.
The full schutz title should still be everyones goal, and these lesser, or partial steps kept to as just a lerning tool not as full competition sports.
I think it's great as well, also for the reasons mentioned, and b/c of the opportunity to bring JQP into the sport on some level. Once the dog owning public gets involved and begins to understand what Sch is about, we can start to undo some of the damage done by the Davidson/Dateline debacle and PETA in general.
