Yesterday while taking my sister's pup to the vet for his shot to help with allergies , The vet asked me if I gave my pups heartworm medication, I do so he went on to tell me that there are shortages of the medication that treats heart worms and he was not able to order any more at this time, that freaked me out because even though They are on preventatives anything can happen. I wonder if any one already else already heard of this or am I just very very late to well know news
I am unaware of any shortages. I would be contacting another vet in your area to ask some more questions.
I have not had any trouble getting heartworm medication for my two.
I had not head that, but do know that there is research proving that the preventatives are not as effective as they have been in the past. The parasites are becoming resistant to the drugs & therefor more & more cases of heatworm are bring diagnosed, inspite of cafeful, consisitant & proper use of the HW meds.
I know that there are certain areas of the south east (I know Tenn. is one area) where they are being told to use the HW meds 2x a month instead of 1x & that may be causeing some shortages in product availability. Don't know if that may be the reason in your vets case.
The heartworm preventative is still available but if a dog still gets them they can not be treated is what I mean. I saw a news clip were the vet has to choose which dog lives and get the treatment and the other dies I will look for it.
Anne: I did not know that !I am going to look into giving it twice instead of once
I would check with your vet before doubling it. They may be giving different meds each time. 1x with HG & 1x with another med for HW. I check before just adding anther dose.
As Elizabeth mentioned, it is apparently the treatment drug, not the prevention drug, that is currently in short supply. Here is a link that was posted a while back on a breed-specific forum I belong to:
