when is it to old to take on a Belgian Malinois? I will retire next year and would love to have one but an not sure I could give it the leadership it would need. I now have two Labs and have them in obedience and rally along with walking every day from 3-5 miles. Got a bad heart and that is why we walk so much. I will be 65 in April and just don't know if I can do the dog right. I know it would be in rally and obedience and maybe agility, would have training every day, would that be enough? When is old 2 OLD?

Gerald: I feel your pain. I to will be turning 65 in March, I
purchased a WGS three years ago. We went through the obedience
classes, We walked everyday played ball everyday and then I
broke my leg. My poor dog suffered from a lack of exercise but
she took it all in stride, I however have felt really bad and
I am still recovering and it won't be until October that we can
again start our walks. You posed a difficult question because
anything can happen. Follow your heart, if you feel questionable
maybe its not a good idea, but only you can answer that.
Best of Luck

I don't think you can assign a number to it, it's more about the individual person's ability to meet the mental and physical needs of the dog. If you can give the dog proper exercise, mental stimulation, training, can physically control it, etc then you are the right age :-) If you can't, doesn't matter if you are 20 or 80, you are to old.
Stuff happens, so just because someone is 30 when they get a dog doesn't mean they won't have some life changing illness or event 3 years later, and have to make other arrangements for their dog.

That is very true, Kadi. I say go for it. You would probably give the dog a better home than many people half your age.

I'm 66 and have two GSDS. The 7+ yr old is SAR trained, SchHIII, CDX, HT, CGC, TT.
The 4+ yr old is CGC, TT.
I don't see, or even look for and end in sight for me and dogs. To much to still learn!

And they can fetch his walker and cane without putting a dent in either! |

				John
Had two of them. Don't want another.
I know there are good ones out there but I just couldn't handle the nerve issues.
In drive they were nice to work with. Not in drive and it was like they were waiting for the sky to fall.
If I want another crazy I'll get back into terriers. They all have a tiny little "No fear" tat somewhere on their bodies.

Barbara
That's just cold! You have no idea how many walkers I went through before I could get them to even bring one back to me, much less dent free.
