Hi everyone. Well after a summer of off-and-on bloodshot eyes Melody has been to an opthamologist and it looks like she has pannus. I have some Tacrolimus drops to put in her eyes twice a day and the vet said it takes 4 to 6 weeks for them to start working. I am wondering if any of you have any experience with this and also any advice about limiting uv exposure in central Texas?
The research I have done so far doesn't look too hopeful and she is only 2 years old so I am very concerned about long term medications, especially if they may very well not be effective. Help?
I have had dogs with Pannus and KCS and with medication they did very well. For UV exposure in outside kennel areas you can do shadecloth etc. When you read up on things you tend to see worst case scenarios presented - with my dogs it was a manageable condition. My dogs were diagnosed as older adults but both lived a normal span with albeit not perfect eyesight but managed well.
I have a lot of experience with it, since my boy has had it since he was around 2 or 3 years old. He's 8.5 years old now and his vision is still great!
I took him to a specialist when I noticed a small spot in his eye. He was diagnosed with chronic superficial keratitis. Since that day he has been on two different medications in the form of eye drops.
He gets one drop of prednisolone in each eye in the morning, and one drop of sandimmune in each eye at night. They have been very effective at keeping the disease in check. He goes every year for his annual eye exam and so far everything has been great.
I am most concerned about having to put steroids in her eyes, especially since this is a chronic thing and I don't want her to develope any problems as side effects from long-term medication.
So far I don't see any difference since using the drops but the opthamologist said this stuff can take 4 to 6 weeks to start working.
