I’ve recently been asked to join a “regenerated” SchH club – which as you know, involves membership fees. I don’t have issues w/ this; however – I was a little upset over the fact that the helper (currently – the one and only) was also asked to pay the same fees.
Note that this helper does not get paid to train our dogs and generally has no one available to work his dogs. I thought that this was a bit unfair as he gives his all to the club when he could be out getting paid big bucks to do pretty much the same thing elsewhere.
I agree with you. The helper should at least not have to pay to be a member and probably recieve even a token stipend. The one thing that may have been a consideration is insurance. I don't know, and am probably grasping at straws, but it may be the insurance only covers members?

I agree with Richard. If the club wants to keep this helper around, it must take care of him. For some helpers, social reward "sincere thank you's" are enough. But the novely will wear off.
In addition to money, there are other ways to show appreciation. Someone could "dog-sit" for a few days. Occasionally help him with track laying. Or, trade some other service like car repair, lawn mowing etc.
The club should be grateful that they have this willing helper. After all; he's giving his all and his dogs aren't even reaping the benefits of his membership. To charge this helper fees is wrong. I don't believe the barter system would end up working out for the helper. The helper may have initial offers of exchange but in reality; the promises will be forgotten.
BTDT. I never thought of it as unfair until reading this....you're right, it isn't. How large is the membership? Can't ewveryone take a little bigger bite? What about training equipment; does the TD provide it? Who takes care of the needs for repair / replacement? Makes ya stop and think, don't it?

The helper was a little taken aback. Another member ended up offering to pay his fees for him. I've decided I will pay her to help out w/ this expense. Membership is not large; however, he is the only helper and seldom has anyone available to help work his dogs. Just doesn't seem right.
