I am very concerned and frustrated. I have 4 dogs of which the Dobes eat the leaves of some plants and have diarrhea with full leaves in it. It is just a translucent gooey poo with hastily chewed up leaves. Once that is over they keep pooing the gooey mucous like bloody poo.
This is happening just with my dobes. The other two native dogs do not do this. I feed them all the same, exercise the same. As a matter of fact I exercise the dobes a bit more than the native breed.
As per doctor's advice, I give them an anti-diarrhoeal (Levofloxacin Hemihydrate and Ornidazole oral solution) and feed them zero protein food with lots of live yogurt. (Arrow root porridge + Yogurt) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrowroot
If I try to keep them confined, they seem to be doing better and after a few days their stools become firm. But they regress back in a few days.
My girl helga has it especially bad. She will mow down the grass and leaves like she is a "junkie".
I am thinking about muzzling her or confining her. Muzzling seems to be more humane. Kaiser also has the same issue but he does not act like a "Junkie" around leaves, but he poops blood and leaves too.
I would look into any odd plants they may be eating in the same vicinity of the leaves, some common plants are poisonous to dogs.
Is there any way you can get your hands on some pumpkin or sweet potatoes? That would help their digestive tract, or even could go the chicken and brown rice route with yogurt. When my girl isn't feeling good she gets the chicken and brown rice with yogurt diet which seems to help her feel better.
Me personally, I wouldn't go too long on the no protein diet. If its not working, then I'd go with a bland diet instead. Also I would really monitor what they are getting into outside, something is making them sick and I'd be finding out exactly what is causing it. Find the root of the problem then you will know how to fix it.
I'm all for chopping it down, if not try to contain the leaves of the tree or bush that's there eating, a must.
Our back yard has a few kinds of bushes and trees my dog would eat until we covered it with nylon mesh now she cant get at them.
Don't know why but the fig tree leave is the fave and would give her poop issues every time.
Sir, I am hoping that that is the case, but helga Keeps chewing on any thing she gets. Coconuts, fire wood I keep for my stove. Like she is an eating machine. Literally like an obsession.
The offending plant is Arbotrisis Nyctanthes. They used to use the leaves of this plant to polish wood, like a sand paper!!!! No wonder!!!
OK, I said "plant", but don't miss the forest for the tree.
If they are eating random stuff, and you feel pretty certain that the random stuff is causing the diarrhea and not an underlying health problem, then all the food and medicine in the world won't fix this.
