Hi All,
I took my bitch to the vet for a terribly snotty nose, not runny, but goopy. She was nursing 4 week old pups at the time so the vet did a full blood panel to determine if the infection was systemic. At the time, only her ATL and Eosinophil levels were elevated. ATL at 195 and Eosinophils at 21 (normal range 2-10). The vet asked to recheck in 4 weeks. When we ran her blood work again, ATL had gone up to 359 and Eos were still at 21. In addition her BUN had gone up to 34 (normal range 7-27).
Other than these weird numbers, she is eating fine, and is as active as ever. All previous blood work has shown normal levels...
The vet is running additional tests and I don't have those results yet, but I was wondering what tests I should ask for (if the new ones aren't "enough")?
Eos live predominantly in skin, lung, GI tract and female genital tract. Perhaps the elevation is due to the cleaning up of the uterus and the lactation, when cows dry off there is an elevation of eosinophils. Worms, parasites, allergy all cause elevated eos. Tissue breakdown elevates eos.
The ALT I believe is a liver enzyme? Can't comment on that.
The BUN could just be from a little dehydration if the Creatinine is normal.
Snotty nose still?
Has this dog been dewormed ever or lately? Does it have fleas?
Pups healthy and weaned normally? Vaginal discharge?
Yes, ALT is a liver enzyme - all other Alk Phos and Creatine are normal. Snotty nose is all better. The bitch has absolutely been dewormed and her monthly Heartworm preventative also has a round-worm preventative dose. No fleas here in Colorado (yea!). All the puppies have been given a clean bill of health, both by my vet prior to new homes and the routine visit after going to a new home.
When de-worming the puppies at 4, 6 and 8 weeks we saw absolutely no evidence of worms (I'm sure they were probably tiny, but I've seen some de-wormings that are just gross!).
Vaginal discharge was normal while nursing, nothing new since the pups were weaned.
That is good to know on the Eos, Betty! Thank you!
Latest blood test shows her ALT is down to 190, Alk Phos, Creatine, BUN and white counts are all normal - we still don't know what caused the ALT to jump, I'm just glad she seems to be okay. Repeating blood work in another few weeks to make sure ALT continues to drop and all others stay normal - Betty thank you again for the info on the Eos! =D
