Hello, we have 4 day old puppies and mom was doing wonderful, until last night. She quit drinking water, broth, anything and puppies were frantic at the nipples, trying find milk. She is NOT running a fever and we have no idea what is going on with her, husband is at the vet as we speak. Puppies are not losing weight, and some are even gaining, using Ed's puppy formula and a bottle, but some puppies don't seem to like the bottle and/or formula. They may be too hungry to latch on properly. Any suggestions on how to properly bottle feed? They are from 490 to 680 grams and there are 9 of them. Thank you for your suggestions and help!

Be sure they're kept warm. Cold pups will NOT nurse. Be sure the formula isn't coming out too fast -- if you see bubbles at their nose STOP!! They're not sucking it down the esophagus.
Give them time. If they're hungry enough, they'll eat. I use a red heat lamp above mine to keep them warm but a heating pad will work if it's under a folded towel and turned on medium.
Once they're fed and stimulated to go pee/poop (don't forget that! use cotton make-up pads or a soft washcloth wet in warm water. Gently Massage their private parts for 20-40 sec to simulate the mom licking them), they should sleep quietly all in a heap. If they aren't quietly sleeping for the majority of the time, they're either cold or still hungry. At least that's what I go by.

Deb, thanks for your prompt reply! We have a red heat lamp above one side of the whelping box, trying to keep the other side cooler for Mom. She is having a hard time with the heat, as we live in Alaska and 80 is UNHEARD of here! LOL, we also have a 2 heating pads that we put the puppies on, before we try to nurse them. Once they wake up, they seem to be starving! The pups do not stay on the pads very long, they crawl away so they may be too warm, then sleep and get colder. We are most concerned about Mom not drinking, and the vet suggested pedialite. So, we will try that as soon as hubby gets home from store. The vet also gave us a sedative for Mom, as she is a very anxious dog. I am hoping this helps. Again, thank your for your reply and suggestions, it is good to know we are on the right track and I appreciate the bubbles at the nose hint. What about bubbles on the chin? AND, how exactly do you "Burp" a puppy? Same as a baby? Will you hear their burp? I feel so inadequate right now!

I watch my pups, if they are all huddled together it may be a tad cool for them and if they are all spread out a bit warm. It's not fool proof of course..
Did the vet have any idea of what is going on with mom? Is she producing milk?

Yes, she is producing milk, but she needs more liquids. She is not drinking water and not dehydrated yet, so the vet recommended we try pedyialite. The vet also gave us a sedative (1/2) of one to give her once a day, to try to calm her down as she is a very anxious dog. So, puppies are thriving, mom does not have anything going on medically that would prevent milk production, she just needs more fluids. We are offering water, broth, gravy mixture with water and now, pedyialite. We just weighed puppies and they have all gained close to 20 grams in 4 hours, with only a couple of them gaining 4-12 grams. We put the lesser gainers on mom, and gave them what milk she had, then supplemented them with Ed's formula. All is well tonight, hopefully, we can get some sleep, only waking every couple 3 hours, rather than awake all night! I will keep you both posted! Thanks for your comments and suggestions! Vicki

Throwing out a few things, ice cubes? water flavored with a little bit of Ed's formula?
Good luck and I'm happy she does have an infection.

Momma loves the puppy formula, but we don't know how much we can give to her, instead of water. It has quite a bit of dairy products in it, and not sure if this is good for her! We know she needs water, broth and pedylite, however you spell that. I am too tired to go do a spell check! LOL We are happy she not have an infection either Betty, thank you for that!

What about some watered-down formula? Like 1/4 formula to 3/4 water? Would she drink that? What about a beaten raw egg in some water?
Sounds like you're on the right track with the puppies though. And I assume Mom is cleaning them so you're spared THAT chore at least--LOL!

Just a quick update on the puppies and Mom. She is nursing fine now, and eating so much! We are feeding her 3 x a day, healthy canned puppy food, with some formula, raw hamburger, and all mixed in with good quality kibble food. She is doing well nursing, but we have been monitoring the puppies weight 2x daily now, and some of them may or may not gain from the previous day, so we are supplementing them with a bottle. They will be 21 days old on Friday, so we are looking forward to trying some goats milk for them to lap up! I did not realize that 9 puppies was a larger sized litter for a first litter, but MOM is doing well and puppies are too!

I'm glad everyone is doing well!!
Just a cautionary note- you may not want to be mixing raw HB in with all mom's food. The bacteria load on hamburger can cause quite a large problem when you mix it with kibble, which takes a long time to digest.
Cooked hamburger would be fine though.
